Richard Lockwood Obituary

RICHARD A. LOCKWOOD, M.D.

Richard A. Lockwood, M.D., passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2004, one week shy of his 80th birthday. Although he spent most of his childhood growing up in Cleveland, OH, Richard was born in Los Angeles, in 1924, and always considered himself a Californian. The child of Harry Boyne Lockwood and Pauline Winston Lockwood, he was educated at Harvard University and Johns Hopkins Medical School. Most of Richard's career was devoted to medical education, including site visits for evaluation of medical school programs and construction projects throughout the United States. In 1972, Richard left the University of California, San Diego, where he had been Director of Hospitals and Clinics and went to Lubbock, TX where he developed and built Texas Tech University School of Medicine. By 1974, he was Vice President of the Health Sciences Center, where he presided over the recruitment of faculty for the medical school while overseeing the construction of a large health sciences center which ultimately housed basic sciences and the schools of medicine, nursing and allied health. At the same time, he was responsible for the development of three other health sciences campuses. He left this position in 1981, when he moved to Fresno and became Director of Medical Affairs at Valley Medical Center and Assistant Dean of the Fresno-Central San Joaquin Valley Medical Education Program for the University of California, San Francisco. Richard retired in 1996, to pursue his love of literature, music, nature, and writing. Also, as a member of the Valley Medical Center Foundation, Richard had the vision and tenacity to secure funding for the Valley Medical Foundation Endowed Chair. Richard was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Lockwood; and his son, John Lockwood. He is survived by his son, Bruce Lockwood, M.D.; daughter, Paula Lockwood Stewart; their mother, Elizabeth Cochrane; and four grandchildren. He is also survived by his daughter, Pica Lockwood, and her mother, Karen Fall Lockwood. Richard will be remembered with great love and will be greatly missed by his current wife, Karen Thurber Lockwood. Visitation will be held at Whitehurst Funeral Chapel on Saturday, November 13, 2004, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A celebration of Richard Lockwood's life will be held at Northpointe Community Church on Sunday, November 14, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. A Private Graveside service will be held on Monday. My first job at the HSC was for Dr. Lockwood. He was very patient with me and such a pleasure to work for. We remained friends and in touch through all the years - it is a great sadness knowing he is gone. He definitely left his mark on humanity.

My sympathies to the family of Richard A. Lockwood, M.D. I, too, was one of the early employees of TTUHSC, Lubbock, and appreciated Dr. Lockwood's leadership in those early days of the medical school's development.

My deepest sympathies to the family of Dr. Lockwood. I worked for Dr. Lockwood in Lubbock at TTUHSC when he was VP HSC. What a wonderful and interesting person he was, and quite a charmer. The world has lost a treasure. Maggie
