Birch Run, MI
Devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and family hero, passed away October 21, 2016 at Covenant Hospital Saginaw after a courageous battle with mesothelioma. Richard was 87 years old, born on April 4, 1929 in Beaver Township, Michigan, the son of Theodore and Elsie (Mieske) Mattis. Richard was a US Navy Veteran. He served on the USS Charles P Cecil and was a member of the American Legion Post 125. He married Irene Sawatzki on September 10, 1955. Richard enjoyed playing cards with friends and family, trips to Florida, gardening, Coney Island hotdogs, and driving his vintage Ford tractor on the family farm. A man of few words, Richard retired from The Buick in Flint after 34 years in Plant Security.
Richard is survived by his wife Irene; his children, Dale, Ted and Julie (Mike); his grandson, Justin; and his brother, Jerry (Brenda).
Funeral services will take place on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 8101 Poellet St. Birch Run, MI 48415. Richard’s family will receive visitors at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. on Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations to Christ Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society in Richard’s memory would be appreciated.
