HARPSWELL - Richard "Tadpole" Paradis passed away peacefully in his sleep during the night of May 1, 2019, at his home. Some would say that's just about the only thing he ever did peacefully. He'd come to Harpswell from Lewiston as a teenager and worked in fishing, lobstering and as a builder for...

Not sure what to say?

Richard was a family friend of mine. I remember him as a wild, fun-loving, gruff, generous man. When I was a child he would take my whole family out on his boat in Casco Bay. Once when I was about 8, he let me steer it! He would bring gifts for me and my sister back from Mexico every year. I loved Richard & Basil. When Basil died, Richard had a leather collar inscribed for me to remember Basil by. We had a running gag that whenever my sister and me saw him, the first thing we would say was...

Dickie was truly unique. He was feisty, loyal, opinionated, entertaining, and a lot of fun. Glad I had the chance to get to know him. He will be missed.

Richard, a curmudgeon who loved his dog Basil, art, politics, the sea, Margheritas at Margheritas, nice dinners on First Friday in Portland at five star restaurants: at one dinner in the Old Port, he tipped our waitress 100 dollars when he found out she was working on her birthday. I'll never meet anyone else like him. Thanks for the memories Richard xxxxx

Richard was a self-taught filmmaker too. I learned of a short film he did, maybe in the mid-eighties when he was in Mexico. At that time, I had created and produced a show for Maine Public (then WCBB) which showcased Maine films. I was pleased to present Richard's wonderful short. We hung out for awhile, taking our dogs island camping up the Maine coast on Richard's boat. A big-hearted, irreverent, renaissance man! He will be very missed.

Great job on the obit. Richard would surely have been pleased although he wouldn't say so.

Richard was "something" alright---funny, creative, obstinate, stubborn as all get out and......well loved. Was just talking about him last week and wondering what he was up to. He lived with great spirit and died peacefully. That's nice.

Agree...a great obit and tribute to the man!

What a great obit (wow) someone wrote.. I did not know this man..but again great write up...
