It was an honor to know Richard and serve on the Board of the Center for Practical Bioethics during the time he was contributing so much of value to that organization. The organization will miss his intellect and experience. I will miss the kindness,compassion and humor he shared in all his personal interactions. My deepest condolences to Terrie and all the family.

Dr. Payne was a remarkable scholar and an extraordinarily kind person. As a research scholar the Hastings Center, where he served on our board, I learned a great deal from his insights and benefitted enormously from his support of our work. I will miss his wise counsel, but most importantly, I will miss his gracious presence. It was an honor to know him and my thoughts are with his family and friends.
