Richard J. Phipps

I had Mr. Phipps for my jewelry class at Capital University in the 1970s. He didn't mince words, but he had the skills & knew how to teach them. It is inspiring to see his watercolor of Paris every day at Bexley High School where I sub.

It seems unlikely that this is the same Richard J Phipps who was my teacher at Worthington High School in the late fifties. I'm almost 77 myself, and he must have been 15-20 years older than me, at least. Well, I suppose this RJP might have been his son. In any case, I want to express my respect and affection for our Mr. Phipps: I was yearbook editor and he was the yearbook advisor. The art world has lost a truly great artist, friend, and teacher. In going back to school as a young mother, I remember my first classes at Cap with Phipps. He was amazing in design. I learned so much and will never forget his enthusiasm for the arts. I am fortunate that I have several of Dick's paintings to remember him. The spot of red, the bold watercolor techniques, and the dynamic results. He was a super inspiration to the way I teach and paint today. Sandy Leukart

I have so many great memories that will be with me always. I so enjoyed our telephone conversations. I would try to call every few weeks to months just to hear what was going on and how he was doing. He was always so interested in my life and we joked about so many things. Deepest sympathy to Dick Phipps' family. It was a privilege to work with "Boss" and to have had him as a good friend for so many years. He will be sadly missed by many of us here at Capital University. He never seemed to realize how many lives he touched, how many students felt fortunate to have had him as their teacher, and, for many a mentor. I'll miss our conversations...Love you Boss.
