Richard Pratt Prunty – erudite, sesquipedalian, ebullient, chaetophorous, luddite bibliophile – above all, beloved father, brother, friend. We mourn the loss and celebrate the life of this scholarly, enthusiastic, bearded, polysyllabic word using, technology doubting lover of books.Pratt was a...

Not sure what to say?

Way back in the late 70s, I worked for Dick's parents in Oxford, WV - housekeeping, etc. and got to know the family a bit. I'll always remember the stories and memories Dick wrote and read at his father's (Claude's) funeral. They were beautifully written, but more than that, he had captured the essence of Claude with his words. I have just learned of Dick's passing and send my love to all the family. Jane Hearne, Ritchie County, WV

I wanted to pay my respects to Richard Pratt Prunty and family as my mother just informed me of his passing. I am a former student and graduate of Enfield High School (1984). Mr. Prunty was my guidance counselor and an extremely instrumental influence in my life, assisting me in receiving a Nomination from my congresswoman to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Mr. Prunty made me think past my current experiences and think and plan for the future. Because of his counsel, direction and influence I...

Thank you for expressing such love and sharing it with the world. My husband noticed the obituary and read it aloud to me. You've touched many with your loving tribute (and sent a few of us to the OED).

Dear Prunty Family - I have never done this before. I happen to see this beautiful and touching obituary in the Sunday New York Times. The picture showed a person who seems to have been warm and caring. I was so touched by what was written about this teacher, guidance counselor and a man who loved the written word. He reminds me of one of my high school teachers back in Brooklyn who worked hard for causes, unselfish, kind and enthusiastic about life. I somehow got all that from this...

Richard Prunty was a distant cousin of mine and I am working on our genealogy. I am so sorry that I did not get a chance to meet him and his family. I pray for him and all of my relatives with kindness and love...

Your remembrance in print of Richard Pratt Prunty is being shared with my daughters, with the "Left to look up their own words" highlighted! (Each was given her own dictionary at the appropriate time, but it was still easier to ask Mom.)

Wish I had known him -- he sounds like a kindred soul.

Peace to you.

How I wish I had known your erudite, bristle-bearing luddite father- and what a great tribute your obituary is - he would have loved it, I am sure.

Another word maven who has shared this with all my language-snob friends,

Rosemary F. Bowler

Dear Meeghan and Adam,
We were saddened to read of your dad's death. We remember him fondly, and are so sorry for your loss.

A wonderful obituary in the New York Times. Sorry I never met your father.
