Rabbitt, Richard J. of St. Louis, MO baptized into the hope of Christ's resurrection on Friday, December 9, 2011 at the age of 76. Beloved husband to Teresa and devoted father of Michael (Sarah), Richard (Marcela), Daniel, Maureen (Manish), Sheila, and Terese. Dear grandfather of Patrick, Kathleen, and Marie. Loving brother to Peter (Maxine), the late Jean (aka Bunny) and late John. Our dear brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, great-great uncle, cousin and a dear friend to many. He was born October 30, 1935 in St. Louis, MO, the son of the late Peter and Marie Rabbitt. He attended St. Louis Cathedral Elementary School and graduated from Christian Brothers College High School. He attained a B.S. degree in Political Science from Saint Louis University and a J.D. degree from Saint Louis University School of Law. He was married on November 24, 1962 to Teresa Marie Molloy of County Galway, Ireland and St. Louis, MO. He began his career as an attorney in practice with his brother Peter. He was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 1960, serving 8 terms as state representative. He was elected to three terms as Majority Floor Leader and elected to two terms as Speaker of the House (19731976). He served as a member of the National Legislative Leaders Conference from 1967 to 1975. Among his numerous legislative achievements, in 1976 he signed into law the Nurse Practice Act, the first time in a century in Missouri that a Speaker signed a bill into law following an override of a governor's veto. He also helped secure funding for the establishment of the Japanese Garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden. A lifelong lover of opera and classical music, he served on the Board of Directors of the St. Louis Symphony. Following his distinguished career in public service, he was the Deputy Executive Director of the St. Louis Housing Authority, worked in the Law Department of Unigroup, Inc., and continued practicing law into his retirement. Among his many accomplishments, he was honored with the Spirit of Life award by the City of Hope in 1975, at the testimonial establishing a fellowship in his name at the City of Hope - a pilot medical center. He was also awarded in 1973 the Distinguished Service Citation by the Optimist Club West, St. Louis for being a loyal member and exemplifying the high ideal of service to others that all Optimist Clubs encourage. He was an active member of St. Louis Cathedral Catholic Church for 37 years and St. Gerard Magella Catholic Church for 26 years. He was also a grand knight of the Knights of Columbus. Arts supporter, history buff, gifted storyteller, proud Irishman, devoted family man. Services: Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 13, from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Road, Kirkwood, MO. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 14 at St. Gerard Magella Catholic Church, 1969 Dougherty Ferry Road, Kirkwood, MO.
