I remember Dick fondly and am especially appreciative of the many adventures my son, Peter, enjoyed in Dick's company aboard the Neptune. Dick will be sorely missed.

Dick always had some of the best greatest sea stories and was a real mentor to many of us in the Research vessel community. Dick was a leader/pioneer in many fields on and off the water. He will be greatly missed by many of us that new him.

I worked with Dick on NEPTUNE over a period of about 5 years while the USGS was surveying Lake Michigan. I will remember him for his knowledge of the Lake, and his skill with his vessel; and I will miss his great stories.

I have many fond memories of working with Dick onboard Neptune. Especially during one hot July 4th celebration when we flew a huge American Flag past the waterfront and tooted his huge train horn. I'll miss Dick and his sense of humor. May the wind always be at your back my dear comrade. Life on the water is good and I am blessed to have spent time in your presence there.

One would be hard put to find someone with more concern for Chicago's lakefront than Dick Race. He was very proud of the abilities of the Neptune and was most generous in his willingness to use it for the good of the City. Dick Race was a gentleman in every sense of the word and I feel privileged to have known him. I will miss him very much.
