TRAVERSE CITY — Richard "Dick" Charles Raulin, 75, of Traverse City passed away peacefully in his sleep at his winter home in Placida, Fla., on Feb. 8, 2008. Dick was born in Muskegon on Sept. 24, 1932, to Walter and Nellie Raulin.

Dick married Ruth Steen on Sept. 8, 1951, in Shelby. Together they raised two beautiful daughters, whom he loved very much. The family moved to Traverse City in 1971.

Dick served his country with the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a Staff Sergeant.

He was a sales manager in real estate and owned his own company.

Dick enjoyed entertaining and loved to cook for his children, grandchildren and friends at his Long Lake home. He was known for his barbecued ribs. He was very proud of his five grandchildren, and loved them beyond measure.

He was an expert hunter, both with a rifle and a bow, and hunted wild game throughout the United States and Canada. Dick handed over his shot of a lifetime at a trophy caribou in Alaska to his beloved wife, Ruth.

Dick brightened the days of many people with his good-hearted humor. There may never have been a more loyal fan of the Detroit Lions. Dick's courage and perseverance were unwavering as he faced health challenges in his later years.

Surviving Dick are his wife of 56 years, Ruth; two daughters, Pamela (Gary) Klotzbach and Rebecca (Craig) Tester, both of Traverse City; his grandchildren, Madie and Jack Begley, Drake Tester, and Sarah and Tom Klotzbach; a brother, David (Linda) Raulin; three sisters, Margaret (Mel) Curtis, Patricia (Paul) Lange, and Juanita (Wendell) Broome; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and two of his sisters, Barbara and Judith.

A Celebration of Life for Dick will be held on Saturday, May 24, at 2 p.m., at the First Congregational Church of Traverse City, with Dr. Gary Hogue officiating.

The family asks that Dick be remembered through memorial contributions to the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.

The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Services; www.reynolds-jonkhoff.com.

Not sure what to say?

Dear Ruth,

I'm very sorry for your loss. You probably don't remember me, but I'm Del & Juanita Raulin's youngest son. Dad loved coming over for the Raulin Family Reunions in the late 70's and early 80's. While my wife Lori and I only made it for one, we really did enjoy ourselves.

It was always very jarring to see someone else with my name -- yeah, I know he had it first!!

I hope you and your family are doing well. Please know that you are in our prayers. ...

Dear Ruth and family,

I was sorry to hear of Dick's death. I hadn't seen either of you since you moved from Knollcrest Court except seeing Dick at Oleson's Food Store once in his wheelchair. I worked with Dick when he was a salesman at Joslin Chevrolet and he was a lot of fun. I also remember Dick and Ed's attempted venture on building the folding tables when we were still neighbors. Ed died in December, 1991 and I can relate to what you are going through right now. My sympathy...

Dear Ruth, Becky, and Pam:
I am so very sorry to hear of Dicks death. My heart go out for you all. I certainly was surprised! I always enjoyed Dick. I thought he was a lot of fun and very charming.
I know what you are feeling Ruth. I lost my husband Bill a couple days before Thanksgiving in 2006.I haven't been the same since. We were married for 35 wonderful years. He had lung cancer-so unfair.
I am sure you feel the same way Ruth. Please, if there is anything I can do, let me...

This was a shock to me when i read about Dick. I work at Olesons and him and Ruth were super regular customers when they werent in Florida. He was such a nice guy despite his condition. He never let that get him down. This is a huge loss. Im gonna miss waiting on him and asking him how his lunch was. My thoughts are with Ruth and the family at this time. If you need anything when you come back feel free to ask the girls at Olesons.

Dear Pam and Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time. If there is anything you need just let us know. Bless you all.
