RICHARD SCHANTZ

I was blessed to have RIck as my mentor at BBN 1994-1999 (and after I left for the academe) and to work with him on many DARPA projects. Rick was truly the "Father of Middleware", and more than that. Circa 2001 I revisited BBN, and brought along a collegue, Carl Hauser, who had worked for 17 years at the famed Xerox PARC reserach lab. I have known Rick professionally for many years around the 'Middleware' community and I am really shocked to hear this news. Rick was a giant of the area who made really significant contributions both to our understanding of middleware and also very significantly to the creation and maintenance of a vibrant international community around the area. He was also a very good friend to me and to many others in this community and he will be missed greatly. My condolences to his family and friends.

I was a friend of Rick´s for 55 years. I have been trying to reach him for months and today found out why he has not responded. I am still in shock, He was a wonderful friend and I will miss him dearly. Ken klein
