I just found out about Dick's passing. I was attempting to contact him to remember old times. I first met Dick in august of 1973 in the anatomy department of the Marquette Medical school (it hadn't yet become the Medical College of Wisconsin. We were both beginning our second year in grad school. Dick started in 72 and I started in 69, but was on leave for two years in the army. We became best friends that summer together with Gary Kolesari and Bob Belisle, both of whom were just starting...

I met Dick many years ago when I first arrived at Jefferson. I always loved to sit in on Dick’s anatomy lectures as they were always packed with great information and presented in such a relaxed, approachable manner. I also learned so much in the lab from watching Dick skillfully reveal structures of the human body. He was always interested in the growth of the faculty. Sitting in his office one day he asked me to lecture on an area of the body that I was quite unfamiliar with. He had...

Over the past 15 years or so, I've met a bunch of people who had medical training in Philly, and I always had the same interaction with them. I would tell them, "My uncle teaches anatomy at Jefferson in Philly", and they would pause and say, "Wait, is Schmidt your uncle!? I love that guy!" What an honor, to be related to someone so loved.

Dick was a wonderful friend and colleague. Always upbeat, fun to be with, inquisitive, generous with his time and knowledge: an academic in every sense of the word. I shall miss him. Ken Chepenik

I had the privilege of working for Dick for almost two decades. So kind, so pleasant, and so much fun to work for! His passion for education and teaching future physicians came through every day, which was only second to his love for his family. This "LNG" will miss our chats about any and everything, especially my beloved Eagles and his awful Cowboys. I'll be baking up a batch of oatmeal cookies in his honor:) I will truly, truly, miss him.

Dr. Schmidt was a very special person to me. When I would see him in the morning in the hall or in the dissection lab it would bright up my day. He was someone you could talk to about anything whether it be work or personal, debates about football Yes Eagles vs. Dallas wow. I can't imagine him not being here anymore. He will be so missed. There will never be another Dr. Schmidt. My sincere condolences to the family.

I am forever grateful to Dr. Schmidt because he guided me onto the journey as a medical educator, a career path that I love and enjoy every day for these many years. Dr. Schmidt was a great mentor. His passion for medical education and kindness to our students were contagious. His wisdom was influential. I have learned so much from him in anatomical education and in managing the anatomical courses to our students at Jefferson.
Dr. Schmidt was a dear friend. He and I used to ride on the...
