Byles Memorial Home - New London Obituary

Richard J. Simpson, 78, longtime resident of Groton, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2025. He joined his Savior, peacefully in his sleep, after facing a long-term battle with Parkinson’s disease. Richard lived a full and vibrant life.

Richard was a true “jack of all trades”, known for his resourceful nature and his uncanny ability to fix, repair, and build just about anything. He had the most infectious sense of humor which gave him a knack for putting smiles on people’s faces. If a tool was ever needed, Richard was sure to have not just one, but likely three, ready for the task.

As a proud veteran, Richard serviced his country in the Vietnam War for the U.S. Navy. Richard worked as a Union: Laborer, Carpenter, and Millwright.

However, Richard’s greatest joy in life was undoubtedly his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, MaryGail Simpson; his son Christopher Simpson and his wife, Jessica Staigers-Simpson, and the apple of his eye- his granddaughter Carley Simpson, all of Groton. He is also survived by his brother William Simpson, of Groton; his sister June and her family, of Plainfield; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews, his loving neighbors, and his good friend Paul Kutia.

The family would like to express their gratitude toward Hospice care and the caregivers who took such great care of Richard during the past months.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 15th from 4-6pm at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames Street, Groton. Richard will be buried with military honors at a private ceremony with his close family.

The family asks that donations in Richard’s memory may be made to Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinsons Research, P.O. Box 5014 Hagerstown, MD 21741 or to another charity of your choice.
