I always felt a special connection that he and I happened to share the same birthday. My childhood was brightened by trips to New York and what felt like a magical home he literally created. I can remember each room's special wall coverings, the piano (his occasional attempts to teach me before I insisted on playing my own way), the woodsy backyard and pool, the den (I specifically loved the matryoshka dolls), the stuffed cat "Meowmers" and every detail down to the houndstooth wallpapered...

I will miss my father-in-law immensely. Richard was a truly generous person and always the consummate gentleman. He loved visiting his grandkids in California and always made the trip for each of their births. He remained curious and interested in their lives until the last time we spoke.
