Not sure what to say?

I was deeply saddened to learn of Dr Sommer´s passing. I had worked with him on a number of occasions, foremost of which was my search for documentation on my Great Grandfather´s Civil War history. We have lost a great mind in his passing.

Dick always was a gentleman and a scholar. I met him through the Chambersburg Civil War Seminars & Tours. While I did not know him well, he always recognized me when we came in contact. Impeccable dresser! Luxurious beard! Precise speaker.

Dick Sommers was one of the most intelligent people I ever met. He gave numerous programs to our Civil War round table and he was a such a pleasure to work with. His knowledge of military history was second to none. There a very few books on the Civil War that Dick is not mentioned in the acknowledgments. It was always a treat to attend a function and find Dick and Tracy were together - and that was often. Anybody who knew Dick or Tracy knew right away that they were made for each other....

My condolences to Mrs. Sommers and Dick's brothers.

I just learned of Dick's death and I deeply regret I could not offer my condolences in person last weekend.

My Dad loved Dick Sommers. Until the day my Dad died he saw Dick as the brightest mind in Civil War studies. Dick greatly honored my Dad by studying with him at Rice. He was one of the few folks who could humble my Dad. Every so often while Dick was at Rice Dad would come home deflated from work. When Mom asked what...

I will always appreciate his scholarship in military history. This is a sad and painful loss for the academic community; my condolences to his family for your personal loss.

I am Truly and deeply sorry for your Loss. My warmest condolences go out to the family and Friends of Richard. May the God of all comport Grant you peace and Strenght during difficult time (Psalm 91:11).

Our condolences to Dr. Sommers family. May you find comfort in all the beautiful memories of moments shared together. John 6:40

I was a college classmate of Dick's and enjoyed every visit I had with him. I especially remember the class mini reunion in 2008. It was a wonderful four days filled with a visit to the Gettysburg battle field and touring the area. Dick also researched the history of several classmates who had ancestors in the Civil War. His talks at the regular reunions at the college were also wonderful.
