Not sure what to say?

As a former student of Richard Stien, I wanted to say that he was one of the most influential art teachers that I have ever had. I always looked forward to his art classes because he not only taught you invaluable art techniques, but he taught you what it was to express yourself as a human being within your art. We often talked about how music and art influenced each other. He taught me about opera and also started me on a lifelong love for it. Because of him, I continued on and completed...

I attended painting and life drawing classes with Richard Stien from 1990-1992. His work inspired me and he was ready to pass down techniques to help his students succeed. During those years he loved to listen to musical scores and opera in the classroom. Even 30 plus years later I have so much gratitude for Richard´s kindness, warmth, and inspiration! My sympathy goes out to his wife, family and friends.

I was one of Dick's earlier students having begun classes at GRJC in Jan. 1970. I think that was in the middle of his first year of teaching. Fellow students often joined him for some beers after class at the Cottage Bar. He was the first to have nude male models for his Life Drawing class. Dick photographed my work for my portfolio. In 1980 he summoned me to come to Key West and help transport his work back to G.R. I bought a small painting he painted in Key West. It has a golden sky...

Dick was so special to me. I knew him long ago. He was a great artist and had a great sense of humor. He will be missed by many.

I was a student of Dick's and had him for several art classes at GRCC. He was funny, fair and had a big heart. I was one of his students who traveled to Greece in 1997 on an unforgettable trip that influenced my love of Greece, travel and wanting to immerse myself into the Greek culture. I have returned to Greece many times after and made some wonderful friends and seen so many wonderful places. Dick was outgoing and loved people. He was honest and held himself to the highest standard. I kept...

Dick and Steph

So sad to see this. Dick was 2 years ahead of me in high school and in some of my art classes. He was always so talented and very funny. Years later I took a painting class from him at GRCC and we got to reminisce about high school days. He also taught me some wonderful painting techniques that I still use. Unfortunately I will never have his level of talent and skill! My sincere condolences to his wife and family on the loss of such a wonderful man.

Dick was a colleague, friend and teacher to me. His memory will be a blessing and I will continue to cherish his oft repeated quips. Thanks for your kindness and for the memories.
