In Loving Memory

Richard S. Thomas, 66 years old, died peacefully March 13th, 2023 after a hard struggle with cancer.  Dick was born in Duluth, Minnesota to the late Kathy and Wally Thomas.  He was the youngest of three children and is survived by his brother, Bob Thomas and sister, Mary Carney.  Dick grew up in Bay Village, Ohio.  He graduated from the architecture program at the University of Cincinnati in 1980 where he met the love of his life, Joanne Bryndal.  After college, Dick moved to Colorado to start his career.  He married Joanne in 1981.  They were blessed with two children, Kate, married to Bill Barnes, parents of Hanna and Lys, and Anna, mother of Camryn, Rylee and Kingston.  Everything Dick did was out of his love of God and for his family; he was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. The family moved from Colorado to Maryland and finally returned to Cincinnati in 1990. Dick enjoyed a long career as an architect and was a Vice President/Partner at SHP.  He took great pride in his work, mentorship of his colleagues, and the relationships he built through his career at SHP.  Dick was a dedicated member of the Catholic faith and lived his life with the tenets of his faith.

The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 2501 Riverside Road Cincinnati, OH 45202.

Memorial Donations can be made to: PWC (People Working Cooperatively) – pwchomerepairs.org, Or St. Rose St. Vincent de Paul Society – to the church address above or 1125 Bank Street, Cincinnati, 45214.

The family would like to thank all of our family and friends who helped during Dick’s illness.  Thank you, too, to SHP, Hospice of Cincinnati Blue Ash, and the wonderful doctors and nurses at The Christ Hospital.  Your outpourings of kindness and support have been humbling.  Dick lived with gratitude for his life and focused on counting our blessings; you all were a part of that.  God bless you all. With love, peace, and gratitude, the Thomas Family.

Single Memorial Tree

Joanne, I was so sorry to hear of Dick's passing. I am glad to know he was surrounded by his loving family during this time. I first met Dick in the summer of 2014 when I joined SHP. The first project I worked on with him was the renovation at Summit Country Day School. I will always remember him saying to the school that if they gave us the time to plan it, we could get the whole thing, including the rebuilding of the collapsed wing, during two summer breaks. It was ambitious, but under...

Working with Dick on a few meaningful school projects in the late 90’s was a great blessing - calm, intelligent, sensitive manner with people combined with his aesthetic and artistic touch in design was a beautiful combination. His sincerity, humility and grace were special. Grateful for this special man.

Richard’s devotion and love for his family was evident to anyone who knew him. Our deepest sympathy to Joanne and the rest of his family.

With love and peace
