Richard and I were classmates and friends in college, in law school, and then for seven years as associates at Sullivan & Cromwell. He was always a pleasure to be with, and the sharpness of both his intelligence and his wit were remarkable.
His advice was insightful. Once, during our years at Sullivan & Cromwell, I remarked that perhaps I should develop a taste in opera, popular among many of our colleagues. "Don't bother," said Richard. I did not.

I had the pleasure of climbing Three Fingers in the Washington Cascades in the '80s with Richard and his, and my, very good friend Charles Goldmark. Being with these two Yale Law School graduates was an experience never to be forgotten.
