J M Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc. - Petersburg Obituary

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day - and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing." 2 Timothy 4:7-8

Mr. Richard Thomas Wyatt, Jr. affectionately known as “Junnie”,  heard his Heavenly Master’s call and was beckoned by God to enter the Heavenly Gates on Saturday, April 22, 2023. As a faithful servant of God, his heart’s desire was fulfilled to hear the words he spent his earthly life awaiting, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:23, as he bid farewell to all earthly sickness, daily worries, burdens and cares.

Richard’s legacy is one that epitomizes loving the Lord, his family, his friends and his beloved neighbors. His compassion, grace and wisdom were seemingly unbounded. Our beloved “Junnie”, slipped away peacefully from labor to reward surrounded by his family after a lengthy battle with health challenges at his residence in Amelia Courthouse, Virginia. Richard was a precious gift from God born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia on July 16, 1944 to his loving parents, the late Mary E. Jones Wyatt and Deacon Richard T. Wyat,t Sr.

In addition to his beloved parents, Richard was reunited at Heaven’s Gates with his mother-in-law and father-in-law, the late Carrie Stewart Thompson and Freddie A. Thompson, Sr.;  sister-in-law, Deaconess Ida T. Taylor and her husband Deacon Henry V. Taylor; two brothers-in-law, Irving H. Thompson and Russell Harris, Sr., and a very devoted nephew,  Staff Sgt. Marvin Venoid Taylor.

Richard was a graduate of the Historic Southside High School in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. He confessed his life to Christ at an early age and was baptized at Rocky Branch Baptist Church, Sutherland, Virginia, where he attended regularly as a child. He enjoyed attending different church services and was deeply inspired by the melodious singing of gospel music performed by various gospel groups.

Our beloved Richard was a charismatic man who possessed a strong work ethic. He was gainfully employed with Seward Luggage, Titmus Wilke Plumbing and Heating, Southern States and Lone Star. After 30 years of faithful and dedicated service, Richard retired from Vulcan Rock Quarry in Prince George County, Virginia. Richard was a strong and determined provider who was proud to work two jobs a day until his health began to decline.

Richard was a man who enjoyed spending time with family and friends, working in the yard, fishing, singing, fun-filled cookouts and heartwarming family dinners. He never met a stranger and would help anyone in need. We truly Thank God for blessing us with a wonderful and devoted husband, a generous and dedicated father, a supportive and loving brother and brother-in-law and a kind and encouraging son-in-law.

Richard’s blessed life, unconditional love and endearing legacy will forever be remembered by his loving, faithful and devoted wife of 57 years,  Katie Thompson Wyatt; sons, Kenneth Leon Wyatt and Christopher Archer Wyatt. Richard is survived by his loving and devoted sisters, Rosetta Wyatt Harris (Russell Jr. deceased), Verlina Dean (Robert), and Austean Whitfield (Milford Sr.), loving and devoted brothers-in-law, Robert Dean, Freddie A. Thompson, Jr. (Sally); loving and devoted sisters-in-law, Dea. Joann Thompson (Irving deceased); loving and devoted uncles and aunts, Dea. Garfield Jones, Rev. Dr. Herbert W. Anderson, First Lady Obena Wyatt Anderson and Mary Ford Wyatt; nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends especially Charles H. Friend, Jr.;  two very devoted cousins whom he worked with, James Briggs and Thurman Briggs. Lastly heartfelt thanks to his devoted caregivers, Petersburg Wound Center, Home Healthcare Nurse, Debra Hodge, hospice team nurses, nurses aides, social workers and chaplain of Bon Secours in Richmond, Virginia.

Services will be held 3:00 P.M., Friday, May 5, 2023, in the Chapel of J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. Herbert Anderson, eulogist and Rev. Damion T. Batts, officiating. The interment to follow at The Jones Family Cemetery.
