We go back to kindergarten and to the Western District - enjoyed your book on that world, Richard, and seeing you again in Port Fairy not all that long ago. Hoped we would meet again. Travel well.

As one who is related to one of the 'vanished' Western District squattocracy families that Richard catalogued in his excellent 2017 work (and this in a way which seems reminiscent of Book II of Homer's Iliad) - a tome that effectively bookends Margaret Kiddle's fine social history, 'Men of Yesterday' - I remain (as I trust do others) grateful to him for the survey (and essentially 'analysis') that he gifted us with, while the elegance which he exhibited in his writing of it, testifies to him...

I'm reading Richard's 'The Vanished Land' (pub. 2017) to which I was alerted after news of his passing. It is, of course, very well written and a major contribution to Australian history. Vale.

i got to know richard when he was afooty commentator wih graham eddy at 3tr sale.iwas involved with bairnsdale footy club in the 1980s.a lot of happy memories and he always gave our club good coverage.r.i.p. good friend.

I remember Richard working alongside Maggie Tabberer on TV. A great pair !
