I'm saddened to hear of Rick's passing as I returned today from out of town. I met Rick when I started working at Ch.7 and covering courts, He had the knack of asking a question, a tough question, which a lawyer or politician could not sidestep with the how dare you ask me that answer. I spoke with Rick last as he covered Jim McDonnell's endorsement from Mayor Garcetti. We talked about some of the past and how he was going to retire. I will always remember you for your help and friendship...

Rick and I came up together in the news business. We started out at the Copley News Service where he covered the LA County Board of Supervisors and I covered LA City Hall. A few years and some job changes later, he and I found ourselves working together again at the Daily News, when I helped cover politics and Rick...well, Rick made general assignment reporting into something of an art form. He was a professional in every meaning of that word and knew how to write a cracking good news...

Rick and I became friends and colleagues when I was at City News Service and he was at Copley News Service many years ago. We later worked together at the Daily News. He was an honorable and good man and a great newsie. He will be missed by not only his many friends, but by the thousands of readers who relied on his reporting over the years.

I remember Rick as one of the cool guys at Birmingham High, a half-year ahead of me which meant that he couldn't or wouldn't ever talk to one of us -- always in his letterman's jacket, always hanging out confidently with the other cool guys. When I went to work for Common Cause and would see him at City Hall, I'd cock my head a bit to the side each time and wonder how someone who'd been, well, you know, the way cool guys are, had morphed into such a remarkably serious, talented, and...

This guy was made to be a newspaper reporter. He lived it. He had a great spirit, quick and easy laugh, saw the humor and irony in everything. Yet he realized that facts make the story, not spin. Not for nothing is he being lauded by public figures who have little in common with one another. Decades ago, when we were colleagues at the Valley News, he did me one hell of a good turn. When the regular city editor was away for several months---a guy who was intent on keeping me, the punk rookie,...

I am so sad to hear of Rick's passing. During my first real job as Press Secretary to then City Councilmember Zev Yaroslavsky, Rick was very patient and kind, even if he was trying to meet a deadline. He will be missed.

Rick Orlov interviewed me in 1988 when I was active politically working as L.A. County Coordinator for Pat Robertson's presidential campaign. He was a true gentleman. No slurs or jokes. He just wanted the facts. I have followed his column faithfully since. He will be missed
