Rita Virginia (Tanguay) Piette went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 10, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Rita was born in Newport Center, VT to Emilien Tanguay and Marie (Dumont) Tanguay on October 18, 1936 where she grew up on the family farm. Rita graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1955 and married Marcel Piette on June 15, 1957 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newport. She and Marcel would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. After spending two years with her husband in Germany on his military tour of duty, the couple settled in Irasburg where they raised nine children. Rita was actively involved in the Irasburg PTC, St. Theresa’s Ladies Guild, and taught Catechism for many years. Rita was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will best be remembered for her special occasion cakes and craftiness. She used her sewing and artistic talents to create many clothes and gifts for those she loved and passed on her creativity to her children and grandchildren alike.
Rita leaves behind her husband of 60 years, Marcel, and her children and their families: daughter Susan VanHouwe, her husband Jay, and daughter Megan; son Donald, his companion Fran Smith, and children, Ross and Jennifer; son Gerard, his wife Teresa, and daughters, Sara, Allison, and Celeste; son Denis, his wife Nancy, and sons, Derek and Kyle; son Louis, his wife Mona, and children Stephanie and Tim; son Leo, his wife Karla, and daughters, Hannah and Jade; son James, his wife Heather, and sons, Ethan and Tom; and son John, his wife Peggy, and children, Nicole, Evan, and Isaac; also by four great-grandchildren, Gavin, Leah, Ryker, and Madden, by a brother, Fernand Tanguay, and sister, Simone Fitzgerald, and by many nieces and nephews.
Rita was predeceased by a son, Roland Piette, a daughter-inlaw, Louise, two brothers, Marcel and Claude Tanguay, and a sister, Jane Boissenault.
A mass of Christian burial for Rita will be celebrated Tuesday, June 20 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport. A reception will follow at Paul’s Sugar House in derby.
