Robert Aaberg Obituary

Robert (Bob) Arnold Aaberg lost his seven year battle with cancer and passed away at the age of 79 on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 surrounded by family.

Bob was born in Portland, Oregon on October 28, 1943 to Lois and Arnold Aaberg. The timber industry brought his family to Marysville soon after WWII where Bob lived for the rest of his life. He attended Linda and Alicia schools then graduated from Marysville High School in 1961. Yuba College and Sacramento State followed with graduations in 1963 and 1965. Later he earned a Masters of Arts in Education from the University of San Francisco.

Sports captured Bob's interest as a young boy, and soon proudly became part of the Knothole gang of emerging baseball players that marched from downtown Marysville to Bryant Field to root on the semi-pro Marysville Giants. Bob played baseball and basketball for Marysville High School, Yuba College, and Sacramento State. Always known as "the lefty pitcher," he helped Sacramento State win the coveted Far Western Conference and Western Regional in 1964. He also played several semi-pro seasons with the Marysville Giants and one for the Humboldt Crabs.

Bob enjoyed teaching Physical Education for 39 years. Starting his career at alma mater Marysville High School, he then became part of the inaugural staff team to open Lindhurst High School. His career included decades of coaching boys and girls basketball along with varsity baseball. He embraced the role of teacher and coach. To that end he believed in creating successful student athletes and promoting fitness for life. Bob served as Physical Education Department Chair and Athletic Director at Lindhurst before retiring in 2005.

Bob loved competition and teamwork. He was humbled and honored to earn accolades throughout his athletic endeavors. Among the highlights were inductions into the Northern California Sports Association (2008), Yuba College (2009), and Lindhurst High School (2018) Halls of Fame.

Retirement was busy with his favorite pastimes of family, friends, travel, hunting, fishing, golf and grandkids.

Though times got tough throughout his cancer journey, Bob never gave up hope for a cancer cure. To that end, he participated in four clinical trials at Stanford and U.C. Davis. He always wanted to help future cancer victims and in doing so never lost his wit or sense of humor.

Bob is survived by wife Nancy Aaberg, son Kevin (Mary) Aaberg, daughter Kristen (Greg) Mathews, sister Shirley (Don) Hale, sister Marilyn (Wayne) Russell, sisters-in-law Barbara Aaberg and Carol (Peter) Harrison, brothers-in-law Michael (Jennifer) and Thomas (Lori) Hudson, grandchildren Alexandria, Charlotte, Quinn Small, Ella Aaberg, Luke and Annabelle Mathews, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was a wonderful and beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, friend, and person.

Bob is predeceased by his parents Lois and Arnold Aaberg and his brother Bill Aaberg.

The family would like to thank Sutter North Hospice, nurse Gurpreet Lakhat, and friend Joe Klaker for their special role in his final days. Arrangements are under the direction of Trident Society Roseville.

Thank you to go to the Aaberg family for sharing him with many students at lindhurst high school. I have such positive memories of coach Aaberg, one in particular of him, encouraging me as I was walking out on the track in high school. Coach Aaberg and the coaches at lindhurst helped to shape my life. Thank you.

I recently learned of Coach Aaberg's passing and have been thinking a lot about the influence he had on my life. An understanding that I think I have only come to attain after reaching this age of my life.

Aaberg saw something in my capabilities, which gave me confidence not only as a baseball player but also as a student. I can still hear his voice to this day..."if you got the brains to do it Turkey...then do it". He helped shape my character as high school student and influence my future with his support as a coach and mentor-Informing those around you about the Belief you have in them is powerful force.

Even as I write this I come to realize how much he was a part of my youth and current life. Aaberg coached my older brother Opinder "Ope" Moroak, my cousin and some of my closest friends to this day. All of us have fond-collective memories with him involved. To this day, I think one the best experiences I have had was being apart of the 98-99 baseball team, love all of those teammates to this day and am grateful for those memories. All of which we facilitated by a man we called Aaberg!

Thank you Coach !

I have many good memories of Mr. Aaberg he was my teacher in high school @ Marysville High School - he taught P.E. And I enjoyed his class - I was a helper for the Basketball teams and he was a great coach. Later, I was a co-worker / teacher at Lindhurst High School and he was a good teacher and coach there - I attended many games and always enjoyed his work with students. First met Bob at age 11 at Linda Little League. Played baseball with him thru high school and summer leagues. He was in my wedding in 1962. Although we lost touch as life took us different directions, the memories has kept him in my heart and mind. He will be missed by the many lives that he touched.

A spectacularly modest, humble and caring guy who was an unforgettable friend, athlete and fishing buddy. Knowing Bob since grade school and in high school, it was a long hiatus before we reconnected when he thoughtfully attended my Dad's service some years ago. I was fortunate then to meet Nancy and together we attended our 50th high school reunion in Marysville. Golf was his passion during this time and it was a delight to again play a few rounds with him. Our deepest condolences go out to Nancy, to Marilyn, his sister and his entire family. He will be sorely missed but forever in our memories.
