Robert Ball Obituary

Robert Russell Ball
1932-2022
Robert Russell Ball passed away on January 15, 2022 after suffering a fall, at the age of 89. Bob was born to Robert and Ruth Ball, and had two older sisters Barbara and Marian. A year after his birth in Florida, the family moved to Indianapolis, and then moved to a farm outside of Garden City, Kansas when he was ten.
Bob grew up working on the family farm and served as the state president of the FFA Kansas chapter. The son of an ardent high school coach, Bob was active in all sports during his high school years, even hosting a local radio sports show he announced as "Play Ball with Bob Ball". He began refereeing high school football and basketball games during his college years at the University of Kansas, and remained an enthusiastic football fan throughout his life.
In 1953 Bob married Marlene Moss, whom he met at college, and they had four children. Bob graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Kansas with academic honors, receiving a degree in history in 1954. He was active in the Air Force ROTC, and after college Bob's time was a mix of active and reserve duty with the Air Force and his studies at Princeton Theological Seminary, where he graduated in 1958. He subsequently received his masters and a doctorate from San Francisco Theological Seminary. Bob's dissertation was published in book form in 1977 as The "I Feel" Formula and later reissued as Why Can't I Tell You Who I really Am? He went on to write two more books, Walking on Water: Self-Esteem and a Journey of Faith, and Being With: Maybe This Is What Life Is All About.
His career as a Presbyterian minister began in Bristow, Oklahoma, and in 1961 he became co-pastor at John Knox Presbyterian Church in Tulsa. He and Marlene moved to Houston in 1969 when he became the senior pastor at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church. Bob loved sharing the Good News with people, and wanted everyone to know they were loved, forgiven, and accepted children of God. He had an innate ability to preach, and his sermons made an impact on many. His children still hear from those whose lives were changed by his preaching, 40+ years later. He was known for delivering his sermons, without notes, sitting on a simple stool in front of the church.
He moved to Santa Ana, California and became the senior minister for First Presbyterian Church, where he met and married Susan Stout. Bob and Sue moved to Sacramento where he led Fremont Presbyterian Church, his final church; though he continued to periodically serve as a guest minister and speaker at multiple churches for many more years. After retiring from the ministry, Bob was proud of his work as the Executive Director for the California Task Force to Promote Self-Esteem and Personal Responsibilities; and was philosophical about the task force being satirized (and publicized) in the Doonesbury comic strip.
He met Lorraine Idriss while teaching a class on a cruise ship, and they married in 1995. They moved to Austin in 1997 in order to be near his daughters and watch his grandchildren grow up. Bob and Lorraine enjoyed traveling in their retirement, and visited many places around the world.
Bob was convinced that the most important thing in life was a thankful attitude, and this continued even after his Alzheimer's diagnosis. He always recognized his family when they came to visit, and continuously voiced his appreciation for them. He chose to be loving, kind and grateful, regardless of the circumstances.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his two sisters and a niece, Lea-Anne. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, his four children, Bob (LouAnn) Ball, Dianne (Mark) Erlewine, Randy Ball, and Nancy (Chris) Ball-Corriere, five grandchildren, Kristen, Charlie, Taylor, Kelly and Paige, two great grandchildren, Elise and Isaiah, two nieces, Mary and Myrna, and two nephews, Walt and Russ.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held at a later date. If you wish to honor Bob, in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer's Association, or Meals on Wheels Central Texas.

Dr. Ball came to my thought this morning and, looking him up, found this obit . . . I was blessed to be at MDPC as a clueless teenager, and after college in 1974, sought out Dr. Ball for some direction in my career . . . I will never forget the kindness, wisdom and patience, and whatever he saw in me to give me confidence to move forward. I'll never forget the impact he had on my spiritual growth.

Huge inspirational influence on me when I was growing up in Houston & was a member @ Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church. I'm 68 now & can still recall the impact Dr. Ball had on me with his sermons & could not wait to get a printed copy of his previous week's sermon to review & ponder. Always kind, gentle & humble, i enjoyed our periodic talks after MDPC services & also with Harry Adamson who precedes him to Heaven. He walks now with Jesus in Heaven ~ may I offer my sincere condolences, sympathies & prayers to his family.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Bob's passing. I was profoundly influenced by him back at MDPC during those "magical years" in the Joyful Noise. I have printed copies of many of his sermons. I have a long list of things he taught me that I hold dear to this day. One of my biggest regrets is missing the JN reunion back around 2010, which would have been my last chance to see him and thank him. Now, I'll look forward to seeing him in Heaven. He'll be one of the first people I try to find!

His belief in the importance of Gratitude was made apparent to me years ago. There was a song called "Thank You" that we sang often in church; he told me it was one of his favorites. At first I was surprised, because musically it was nothing special, but then I realized it was because of the words. One verse: Thank you, I have my occupation, Thank you, for every pleasure small. Thank you, for music, light, and gladness, Thank you for them all.

Here are some of the best thing he taught me:

The appropriate thing in any situation is to let people know that they matter.
Only one life, 'twill soon be past, only what's done for Christ will last.
You might be the best Christian that someone knows.

It was my good fortune to have been in the right place at the right time, to know Dr. Bob, and I am so GRATEFUL for that!

Bob Ball's sermons/messages had great impact on my life and I am so grateful that he was part of the Memorial Drive Presbyterian package when we became members! I used to say that he must know me because it felt as though his messages were directed to me! Thank you, Lord, for the gift of special people in our lives. While Bob never knew me personally, he certainly shaped my feelings and attitudes toward life. I am forever grateful! Peace and Love to Bob's family!

I remember fondly Dr. Ball's ability to preach as if I was the only one in the congregation. Seems like everyone felt that way. And of course I remember the stool he brought out from behind the podium to sit closer to the congregation at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church. The Joyful Noise choir had a reunion a few years back in Kerrville. Only a few of us knew Dr. Ball would make a surprise visit and stay for the weekend. When I looked around after he made his grand entrance...I saw so many.. myself included...shedding a few tears...as we were so happy to see him! He made such a huge impact on so many lives while he was at MDPC.

I regret I haven't kept up with Bob other than occasional messages from acquaintances. I grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and my next door neighbor took me to her church (John Knox Pres.) a couple of times to hear her wonderful preacher, Bob Ball. I was thrilled when he became pastor at my church in Houston, Memorial Drive Presbyterian and was the beneficiary of his messages which always bore such important life lessons. His special gift was also that he presented them in a way you never wanted to miss a word.

I remember during a special event at church, the prayer was being offered by an unknown guest, and I was thinking "gosh, that could be Rev. Bob Ball!" It was! He had been invited to attend from Austin.

I am sad to learn about his struggles and his cause of death, but very glad to know about the loving care from his family...I know his family was everything to him.
