Robert Castrignano Obituary

Castrignano, Robert A.
Longtime Stamford resident, Robert A. Castrignano passed away early Saturday morning. He was 96 years old.
Bob was born in Van Nuys, California on August 10, 1920 to the late Rocco and Catherine Castrignano. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in New York City in 1937 and served proudly in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. In 2008, the President of France named him a "Chevalier" of the French Legion of Honor in recognition for his contribution to the liberation of France during World War ll. Bob graduated from the college of the City of New York in 1949 with a degree in electrical engineering. On August 14, 1949 he married Rose Baffa. Bob and Rose moved to Stamford in 1959 where they raised their three children.
Bob was employed by the Columbia Broadcasting System from 1938-1986 where he worked in the Engineering Research and Development Division. Over the years at CBS, Bob rose from technician to Vice President and was proud to have worked on projects including the development of the color television, electron video recording of TV programs, and video and information systems recording on plastic disks. His passion for learning and research led him to a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1956 from Polytechnic Institute of NYU. Bob spent his "retired years" as Dean of Professional Development and Associate Professor of Information Systems at Bridgeport Engineering Institute from 1987-1994.
Bob was a Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He served as an usher for over 30 years at Saint Gabriel Catholic Church in Stamford and served on various civic councils in Stamford, such as the Ct Area 9 cable council, which evaluated proposals for the design and installation of a cable TV system in Fairfield County.
A devoted and loving family man, Bob is survived by his son Robert P. Castrignano of Stamford, Theresa Cribbin and her husband Tom; 9 grandchildren: Tommy, Sean, Catie, & Bobby Cribbin, Carrie, Maria, Tommy, John, and Jackie Aldrich and 9 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy Lettiere of Stony Brook, NY. He is predeceased by his wife Rose and his daughter Maria Aldrich.
A wake will be held at the Leo Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St. Stamford on Tuesday August 23rd from 3-5 and 7-9. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on August 24th at 10 a.m. at Saint Gabriel Church Stamford, CT. Burial will follow at Saint John's Cemetery in Darien, CT.
