Robert Dart Obituary

DART ROBERT EDMONDSON DART Robert Edmondson Dart passed away on the afternoon of August 20, 2011, a Saturday. He was 65 years old. Bob Dart was born in Brunswick Hospital on August 13, 1946, to Opal and William Robert Dart and grew up in Brunswick with his two brothers, Bill and Don. After obtaining his Bachelor's degree from Florida State University, Bob served in Vietnam. During his wartime service, Bob became a field reporter for the Stars and Stripes. He soon learned that he loved reporting, and after his term in Vietnam, Bob went back to school at the University of Georgia for his Masters degree in journalism. In the 1970s and 1980s, Bob wrote for The Today Newspapers in Palm Beach and the Atlanta Constitution. In 1983, Bob became a Washington correspondent for Cox Newspapers, moving his family to Vienna, Virginia, a Washington D.C. suburb. Bob covered numerous presidential and congressional elections, the Olympics, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina, and many political scandals. But what he liked most was writing feature stories about regular people. On June 4, 1972, Bob married Sherry Rogers. They had two children, Jennifer and Rob. Bob and Sherry divorced in 2010. Bob came home to Glynn County, setting up residence on St. Simons Island, in the company of his two brothers, Bill and Don. Bob loved the island and made many friends there. He also loved his family and Florida State football. He is survived by his brother Don and his children, Jennifer and Rob, and will be missed. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, August 24 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Don Dart's home: 553 Magnolia Ave. St. Simons Island. Services will be held on Thursday, August 25, 9 a.m. at the Brunswick First United Methodist Church located at 1400 Norwich Street, Brunswick, GA 31520 followed by a reception in front of the King & Prince Hotel on St. Simons at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP: Understanding and Preventing Suicide Through Research) at www.afsp.org or 120 Wall Street 29th Floor New York, NY 10005.The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, August 24 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Don Dart's home: 553 Magnolia Ave. St. Simons Island. Bob was a great writer and I so enjoyed our conversations...we always worked together 'virtually' but had struck up a friendly relationship. He was a pleasure to work with. I'm so sorry for your loss - Diane Lore

Sherry, Rob & Jennifer, Don
Bob's local articles were something to look forward to, something refreshing from his retirement years. Bob was a local hero and will be sorely missed. Thinking of you and wishing you warm memories to comfort you.

For nearly a decade, I had the privilege of sitting next to Bob, reporting our stories, writing on deadline and sharing the highs and lows of Washington journalism. He was a mentor to me - as a journalist and a dad. He cared deeply about his family, his country and the craft of newspapering. He was my friend and colleague. I will miss him, and I pray he's found peace in heaven, in the arms of the seaside, in the places and people he loves down home.

My wife Margaret and I cherished Bob's friendship and loved his writing. He was a true newspaperman. We'll miss him terribly.

Willing handshake, willing smile, I only met him a few weeks ago, but I'll never forget the moment. Bob spoke at our "Scribblers Writers' Retreat Conference" and published a promotive piece with AJC, prior to the conference. Had I read the copy? No, I'd been in Alaska since the interview. Bob was disappointed. Bob wanted to be read, to be understood and to be appreciated for his talent. Now, we will never know the full range of his ability, the stories he might have created in retirement. The conference was brighter because Bob's light emanated in our presence. Bob was a writer and the final script was his own.

August 26, 2011

Bob, I don't understand this. When we meet in the future I am sure you will explain it. Your friend, Philip

Bob was a gifted reporter and writer whose work I've always admired greatly. But most of all, he was a great guy who was always cordial and engaging when I knew him as a colleague at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He was one of a dying breed who seemed to see newspapering as a joy. While I didn't know Bob well when he worked at the paper, I've seen quite a bit of him lately on St. Simons. I had a few drinks with him just a few days ago and went away promising myself that I would become a better friend. I now mourn the loss of that friendship.

My heart felt prayer is that EACH of you finds the comfort you need, in the LORD and His promises.

Bob's technique was to write down all the quotes first, and then build his story around them. I wish he could see the ones here. And there's still so much more to his story.

I'm heartbroken with our great loss! When I went to Glynn Academy, Bob was one of the heroes and leaders I so admired, and as popular as he was, he was also sincerely kind to us shy underclassmen. I was able to tell him this years later when we reconnected in Wash,DC, when I worked with U.S. Rep Jack Kingston, & worked with Bob on some stories for the AJC. My prayers go to the family and to the multitude of us who knew and loved him. Rest in Peace Bob.

Sherry, my thoughts go out to you and your family. Bob saw himself (quite deservedly) as the biggest wordsmith in our bureau. He labored over each turn of phrase and often what he produced was gold. In a bureau that I say very endearingly was comprised of many characters, Bob stood out for his uniqueness. (I'm thinking of him rocking in his chair...)
I'm shocked and saddened by his loss.

Bob was one of the writers I most respected when I started working in Atlanta. Later, when I was on the national desk at the Journal-Constitution and he was in the Cox Washington bureau, we frequently talked about stories he was working on. I've been hearing from mutual friends at St. Simons and former newspaper colleagues all day. As another of the great writers at the Journal-Constitution said to me a few minutes ago, "Bob was one of the nicest guys I knew at the paper." A lot of us felt that way.

Bob and I crossed paths several times since I left St. Simons in 62. In the summer of 63, Bob hitchhiked to Vero from Brunswick with a suitcase, and a pair of football shoes. He wanted to live with us and play a season of F.B. in Fla.....What a Guy! I always enjoyed seeing him at the Reunions, and on St Simons. We played football together, and formed a friendship that lasted all these years.
In January Bob, Eddie Ratcliff, and myself met at the Red Barn and talked for hours. I feel blessed now, to have been with him one more time. He was a Special person....I will miss Bob Dart, and I know many others will too..
