Skagway's Buckwheat Donahue, a man larger than all of us in size and spirit, journeyed around the bend on October 14, at age 68. He was born Robert Carlin Donahue Jr. on August 16, 1951, in Oklahoma City, and ironically died in the city of his birth, after spending much of his life in Skagway....

Not sure what to say?

Buckwheat personified all that's good about Alaska: Enthusiasm, dedication, toughness, kindness to strangers, and goodwill to all. Build a statue of the man on Broadway.

My old friend is gone but will live in my heart as long as it beats. Words are so inadequate. A big man with giant presence who could walk into a room full of strangers an in a few minutes own the place. Buckwheat you made a big difference!

I am so sorry to hear about Buckwheat's passing. We use to have coffee in the winter & talk about our home town OKC. We always laugh about his Bermuda shorts, wool socks & sandals in the depth of winter & I dressed as Polar Bear with so many layers. Take care my friend where you are. Pam Dolese Reckers

My husband Michael and I are proud to have been married by Buckwheat in Skagway on July 9, 2001. He gave us an Alaska history lesson AND a howl. Great guy. Rest in Peace.

It was great knowing Buckwheat 'Bob' Donahue! We got to bare witness to Jeff and Dot getting married in Carcross as the Best Man and Matron! We worked together for the visitor industry for years and I always enjoyed when our paths crossed. It's so sad that we can't hear his howls any longer.

Buckwheat, I will miss you. You were a true friend to our whole family. Hope you're howling from up high. Sending Love to Kelly and Matthew.
