Rob, Bob or Bobby
If nicknames are a measure of affection, Robert Evans inspired plenty. "To me he was Rob, to Mom he was Bob and to the rest of the world he was Bobby," said his sister, Jeanne Evans, who lived near her brother in Franklin Square, on Long Island.

Firefighter Evans, 36, was also known as Jerry Lewis around the Engine Company 33 firehouse in Manhattan, a reference to his practical jokes and big heart. He often called his sister when he got home from work to say he was O.K., but once, catching her asleep, he decided to call back every 15 minutes. (To avoid retaliation, he then turned off his phone.)

"He was very, very protective, especially of me and my mom," his sister said. "I remember when he went sky diving, he didn't tell me about it. He comes over one day and says, 'Check out this tape.' I look at the TV and it's him sky diving. I said, 'Why would you go without me?' He says, 'There's only two of us, so only one can go at a time.'"

Not sure what to say?

Robert is never forgotten. Today we celebrate his life and remember his courage, service to others, and willingness to answer the call for help which resulted in his passing. May God provide those he loved peace and comfort. May you always rest in peace with your fellow firefighters. God bless

passing Rath park always remember handball and you climbing the famous water tower, god bless you and your family forever and a day can't believe 20 years later and still thinking of you running up that water tower til we meet again god bless

Rob is my cousin. I went with his mom & sister and a couple of friends to the 20th anniversary memorial service and celebration of his life and the life of all those who we lost that day. I say "celebration" because even though its a day of tremendous sadness for so many, it is also a celebration of the beautiful souls we lost that day. God bless each and every one of them and WE WILL NEVER FORGET

Remembering Robert on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

Former Captain of the USS New York (LPD 21), 2012-15. I retired from the Navy in 2019. I met Christina and Jeanne in 2013, when the ship was in New York City for Veteran´s Day. They were on a special tour of the ship for the families of 9/11 victims. We spoke briefly and Jeanne handed me an envelope that contained Bobby's memorial card. I spoke of him often while assigned to that ship. I still have that card and think about Bobby every year on this day. God Bless him for his sacrifice...

What can you say about Bob that hasn't already been said. He had a smile that would light up the room. Can't help wonder what he'd be up to now...would he be married and have a few kids? He'll always be missed.

You were a great friend, thank you. My prayers are with you and your family. AC
