Professor Evans was my history teacher my freshman year. This is back in 1964! I remember the passion he had to explain the events of WW2. He was a dynamic person. I recall he directed a play on the U-Mass campus of "Casino Royale." It was a very fine experience to have him as a teacher.



As a Theatre Arts Major at UMass from '76-'79, I studied American drama and Western philosophy with Prof. Evans. He also directed me in a memorable production of Elmer Rice's "Street Scene." When we were about to open, he exhorted us with these words: “I don't care what you're doing—even if you're doing Medea—get the fun out of it!” Later, he encouraged me to play Harry Hope in a student production of O'Neill's "The Icemen Cometh," which, as co-chair of the department, he sponsored....
