Lessons of Helpfulness

To know Robert Foti, 43, meet his children: Alycia, 13, Robert Jr., 12, and James, 5. This winter, Robert Jr. walked down a snowy mountain — twice — to retrieve a stranger's snowboard. When Alycia was 11, she spent the holidays with her stepmother's family and cheerfully helped out in the kitchen. James, little James, is obsessed with the twin towers that claimed his father's life.

For a while Engine 16 and Ladder 7 displayed a snapshot of James and his father that was hard to forget. The "Santa Claus picture," Firefighter Foti's wife, Mary Grace, calls it. She saw them in the bathtub with soapsuds beards like Santas. She ran to get the camera.

"You can't take our picture," Firefighter Foti protested, laughing. He was chewing a cigar and had his arm around James.

"But it's so cute," Mrs. Foti said, snapping the picture.

Now James says, "My daddy died in the twin towers," to everyone he meets.

"He was always stopping to help someone or doing the dishes," Mrs. Foti said. "He would go on all the field trips with the mothers. It was his nature to help others, which explains why he became a fireman."

Not sure what to say?

I'm sorry for your loss, bro.... But thank you for your sacrifice that awful day of terror

Alex L.

My Mother knew Robert when she lived in the Lower East Side of NYC. I will never forget his name and the sacrifice he made to safe others.

Robert J. Foti Memorial Wall

Once again, I would like to honor Robert J. Foti for his supreme sacrifice. My prayers are for his wife and children - that they may know he is not forgotten and that they, too, are appreciated and respected.

I did not know Robert Foti personally, but I am a longtime supporter of firefighters and I am sorry that he died along with countless other firefighters who helped others. Never forgotten!

I didn't know Mr Foti but I sit on a bench in Bradley Beach in his honor and give thanks to him for his service and bravery. My sincere condolence to his family. His sacrifice will always be remembered as I sit and watch on his bench.

Today I honor the ultimate sacrifice made by Robert J. Foti in rushing in to danger on 9/11/2001 as others were rushing out. I pray for his family and for their peace - that they would know that his sacrifice was appreciated and is not in vain. God bless them. The photo is his name on the Memorial Wall.

Remembering Robert on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

Each year on September 11th, I honor the sacred memory of Robert J. Foti and his selfless sacrifice as he ran into the Towers while others were leaving. I pray for this wife and children and that they may find comfort in knowing that his sacrifice is not forgotten.

We will never forget a firefighter

I was so fortunate to have chosen Robert as a memorial climber September 22, 2018 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. As a retired firefighter now traveling the country in my fallen firefighter memorial truck (Memorial Run), I was invited to Green Bay to share my truck with the climbers. To have chosen Robert was really an honor. We made it to 78th floor and rang the honor bell. We then went on to finish the climb; 110 floors. Through the pain, we will continue to do these climbs for those who no...
