Not sure what to say?

Thinking back on his friendship, I feel honored to have been considered his friend. Bob had this unique ability to find the humor in any situation, and the endearing ability to laugh at himself. He will be sorely missed.

We will miss our lifetime friend.

God bless you Bob.

Bob's passing is a huge loss. He was one of the kindest and most caring people I have ever known. A true gentleman and a "one of a kind" man. It has been a privilege to know Bob these many years and to have had him as a good friend.

Bob was a warm and generous friend and colleague in Moscow and afterwards. Remember with great fondness our infamous trip to the Caucasus and the Laurel and Hardy efforts of our 'minders' to get us to tell them "what are you really doing in Baku - - the caviar you can get in Moscow!"
We will all miss him and wish I had spent more time with this wonderful person in more recent years -- a lesson for us all.

A true gentleman, a wonderful host - he could throw a fantastic party - a great cook and a fantastic dancer! And the consumate professional. Those of us who knew you have an empty place. You shall be missed.

Bob was a great friend and a wonderful person. We first met him in the mid-1970s when he arrived in Moscow. Among the great times we had together, we shared, we especially recall when he visited us in Beijing in the early 80s. We traveled by train all over China. Bob was always quick to spot humor in any situation, and he had plenty to work with on that occasion. He kept us in stitches and left us with enough humorous anecdotes to last a lifetime. We feel very fortunate to have been...

I will remember Bob as a cherished occasional friend. Getting together with Bob was always an occasion, in Washington, Hong Kong, Beijing, or McLean. Ready in humor, tentative in judging people, incisive in discussing events and life's vicissitudes, Bob will be well regarded in our memory and conversations.

Bob was by far and away my favorite station chief in my State Foreign Service career.
