Robert Lewis Hannum "Bobby"

Robert L. Hannum "Bobby", age 92, a lifetime resident of Media, PA died on October 16, 2017.  Bobby was born at Media Hospital to William and Beatrice Hannum in 1924.  Upon graduating from Nether Providence High School in 1943, Bobby served the US Navy for four years on the USS Memphis.  After completing his service and returning to Media, Bobby married his wife, Doris, and began his career with the U.S. Post Office as a mail carrier.  He retired in 1990 after forty years.  Bobby and Doris raised their three children in Media and were members of Packard Memorial Church.  Bobby was an original member of the Media Old Timers. He enjoyed Westerns and old movies particularly John Wayne films.

Coach Hannum, as he was affectionately known by generations of local baseball players, was an accomplished umpire and manager and had an appreciation and love for the old-fashioned game of baseball.  He was both a player and manager in the Delco League and, years ago, the old Valley League.  For many years after his playing days were over, he managed the Media American Legion baseball program where he won numerous championships.  In his retirement years he was a welcome assistant with the Strath Haven High School Baseball Team.  His many accomplishments earned him Hall of Fame Recognition in the Media, Delco, and Pennsylvania State Halls of Fame.  Many of his former players enjoyed coming back to talk baseball with Coach Hannum and very much appreciated his insights and understanding of the game.  He was not only a great coach, but a great teacher of the game.

Bobby shared forty-nine years with his wife, the late Doris Hannum (née McLaurin), who died in 2001.  He was also preceded in death by his son David Hannum in 1988.

He is survived by his son Robert Hannum, Jr. (Lois) of Goldsboro, NC, and his daughter Sandra Hannum (Wayne Klement) of Austin, TX.  He is also survived by three grandchildren Melissa, Stephen, and Christopher as well as five great-grandchildren.

Coach Hannum was always grateful that his family shared with him and supported him in all of his baseball endeavors.

Services:  Bobby's funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 19th, 10:30 a.m. at the Rigby Harting & Hagan Funeral Home.  Friends and family may call from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Media Cemetery.

Not sure what to say?

I am sorry to say that Bob's death just came to my attention yesterday. Being 1,200 miles from Media allows news to travels slowly. I had the privilege of knowing Bob for many, many years. I was the organist and choir director at Packard Memorial Methodist Church for 42 yrs. I sat attentively as Bob taught adult Sunday school and learned a lot about the Bible. He would always tease us that the men in the Bible were always superior than the women and proudly (but kiddingly) called himself a...

Mr. Hannum made growing up in Media in the 50's and 60's a pleasant experience. I remember him well - a nice, kind man. Rest in peace, sir.

We are so sorry for your loss, Sandy. Your Dad evidently loved children, and what a blessing that was to all he coached. May the Lord bless him for all his good works. Blessings to you, Sandy, as you tell him goodbye from this earthly life. One day you shall meet again.

Love and prayers,
Gennie & Louis Tepera

Never met Mr. Hannum, but I know he helped to raise an incredible person in Sandy! Hugs, Ms. Sandy.

Lovely man, Mr. H. Wonderful memories of baseball stories, tickets to the Pirates, and a glorious steam train ride. Fair winds and calm seas, Bobby.
