Robert Harris Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 24, 2015.
Robert Davis Harris, Jr., 85, died Thursday at Camden Place in Greensboro. He was born April 12, 1930, in Greensboro.

Born at the height of the depression, Robert enjoyed watching Shirley Temple at the Carolina Theatre and dreaming of life on the silver screen. Gifted in the arts, he studied art, music and ballet. Robert attended John Wesley College in Greensboro, and was the first man to dance at Women's College, now UNCG. His dancing took him to broadway roles, such as in My Fair Lady and Lil Abner. His lifelong dream of acting in a major film came true when he won the part of old man Cadwell in the movie Cabin Fever. Robert proudly attended Cabin Fever's east-coast premiere at the Carolina Theatre, noting that his career had come full circle. The west-coast premiere was held at Grumman's Chinese Theatre. Cabin Fever, a cult film classic, still enjoys worldwide popularity. Beyond Cabin Fever, Robert is known for his film roles in Junebug and Eyeborgs. Robert was one of the oldest living members of the Screen Actors Guild.

Locally, Robert taught art for 30 years at the Greensboro Cultural Art Center. He was perhaps best known locally for his many years in Greensboro Ballet's production of The Nutcracker. In his later years he and his beloved dog, Tutu, appeared in the opening party scene. "When she hits the stage, she comes to life just like a real actress," Robert noted. After his beloved Tutu passed away, Robert adopted Mr. Toy and together they continued the tradition as long as he was able. Robert also appeared locally as Santa Clause in Greensboro's holiday parade.

Robert is survived by his cousin and caregiver, Phyllis Hooks of Greensboro. A special thanks to his good friends William Jones and Randy Holt.

A graveside service will be held at 2PM, on Tuesday, July 28 at Green Hill Cemetery officiated by Reverend Robert Graves.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro. Online condolences may be made at www.hanes-lineberryfuneralhomes.com.

Thinking of you today Robert, while remembering to shine light in a dark place. Reminiscing about a conversation of ours, you'd spoke of how you'd studied to become a minister yet took a more creative, artistic path...then with great insight you spoke of how interesting it will be to to see what happens with Israel. My hat off to you dear friend for you are one of the brightest Stars. Child of God, I love you....Kendal

We were so blessed to get to know Robert while visiting my dad at Camden Place! He was an artist through and through. I so appreciated his wise words of advice. He told me to listen and interpret the music as I heard it, not to worry about what the audience thought. Be true to that interpretation. He was so serious about that. I will never forget his kindness and his deep appreciation of music.

Robert, we will miss you! You first became dad's friend at Camden Place when he was there for rehab. You became our friend too. My sister's loved playing the violin for you. You loved all music! For a performer, you were quite an audience too. You loved sharing your career with us. Thank you. You are with your heavenly Father now. Rest in His peace.

My heart is sad today. Mr. Harris was such a sweet and gentle man. I met him when he was Santa Claus for the Animal Shelter. I enjoyed talking with him and hearing about his latest projects. He loved his dogs and referred to them as his "little people". I know every one will miss him greatly. My condolences go to his family, caretakers, and friends. Peace be with you and may he rest in peace.
