Robert “Bob” Lee Hitchcock, aged 91 years, passed away peacefully October 8, 2019 in Olathe, Kansas. Bob was the eldest of two sons born to Mary Regina (Bruner) and John Vernon Hitchcock, Sr. He was raised in the Kansas City, Kansas area by his mother and step-father James “Lynn” Robinson.
In 1944, at the age of 16, Bob left his home to became a merchant seaman with World Wide Tankers of Los Angeles, CA. Although not given Veteran status, President Harry S. Truman recognized those employed with the Merchant Marine from 1944-1946 who answered the call of their country and served while employed by the Merchant Marine during wartime. Bob was a member of the Sailors Union of the Pacific and retired from the Merchant Marine in 1988.
Bob served his country during the Korean War, obtaining the rank of Corporal with the US Army, L CO 38th Inf Regt. He was honorably discharged in Oct 1953. Bob continued his service with the United States Army Reserves for 8 years, and was honorably discharged in Jan 1960.
Bob was a lifelong bachelor. He was the beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews: Carol Ann Johnson, Nancy Clewell, Carol Marie Francis, Debora Baum, John Vernon Hitchcock III, Sean Heskett, Adam Heskett, Chris Heskett, Nicole Richards, and Melissa Hamrick.
Bob enjoyed traveling the world, experiencing different countries and cultures, and meeting new people. He always remembered to bring a little something back for his nieces and nephews, whom he spoiled completely!
In 1975 Bob purchased a home in the Joe Bald area of Kimberling City, Missouri. His home had a panoramic view of his beloved Table Rock Lake where he enjoyed fishing, water skiing, and spending time with his neighbors and extended family. He was well known for his kindness, helping hand, and fourth of July fish fries.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; step-brother Robert Robinson, step-sister, Betty Jane Quinn and a brother, John Vernon Hitchcock, Jr. He is survived by his brother, James “Jim” Lynn Robinson, Jr. (Linda), and sister Mary Louise Robinson; 10 nieces and nephews; and 12 great nieces and nephews.
Bob enjoyed helping others. In lieu of flowers, donations can be mailed to Olathe Hospice House in care of Olathe Health Charitable Foundation, 20375 W. 151st St., Ste. 363, Olathe, KS 66061.
A private burial of the cremains will be held with family at a later date. Services under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home, Kimberling City, MO.
