Eastgate Funeral & Cremation Service - Bismarck Obituary

Robert V. "Bob, Hoagie" Hoglund, 82, Bismarck, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2012, at Medcenter One Hospital, Bismarck, ND, after a ten-day illness. A prayer service will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, March 10, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where visitation will continue until 6:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, March 12, at Maple Sheyenne Lutheran Church, 8711 40th Ave N, Harwood, ND, with Rev. Donna Dohrmann officiating. Burial will be held at the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Fargo, ND. Robert was born in Fargo, ND, on July 19, 1929, youngest of eight children born to Louis and Emma Hoglund. He grew up on the farm in the Harwood/Prosper area. Robert graduated from Oak Grove High School in 1947, NDSU in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology and Economics. He joined the Air National Guard in Fargo in September 1947 and served for a period of six years while attending NDSU, during the Korean War. After graduation, Robert worked in the oil and gas industry in Bismarck, Oklahoma City, and Denver. He retired from WBI Subsidiary of MDU Resources Group, Inc, on December 31, 1993, as vice president. Robert married Arlene Pfingsten in June of 1956 at Martin's Lutheran Church in Casselton, ND, and they moved to Bismarck, where they raised their three daughters. Robert was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, North Dakota Geological Society (past president), Dakota Petroleum Club (past president), and the Dakota Landman's Association. He was a member of the American Legion and helped many years for Open Your Heart and volunteered at the Heritage Center Information desk. Robert was an active member of Lutheran Church of the Cross helping his wife with weddings, funerals, and anniversary receptions for 17 years. He also helped his wife buy groceries to stock the Bismarck Emergency Food Pantry for 20 years. After retirement, he golfed until his vision prohibited it. When Robert wasn't traveling for work, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Robert and Arlene traveled to Germany, Sweden and many surrounding countries. Robert and Arlene became very experienced movers having three daughters and helping them relocate. It was quite natural to load a washer and dryer and drive to wherever a daughter needed them. Family was very important to Robert. Robert is survived by his wife, Arlene, Bismarck; his daughters, Robin H. Fuerst, Pharm. D., Bend, OR, Collete L. Hoglund Ph.D., Twin Falls, ID, and Elizabeth E. Hoglund, M.S., Bismarck; granddaughter, Heather Fuerst, Bend, OR; his sisters, Harriet Hayes, Redding, CA, and Mae Strench, Los Alamitos, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elna Cranston and Helen Hart; and brothers, Willard, Chester, and Herbert Hoglund. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1004 E Highland Acres Rd, Bismarck, ND 58501.
