Robert F Jess, age 91. Born March 5, 1924, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend, child of God. He was blessed with a quick wit and sense of humor, leaving a lasting imprint on everyone he encountered. He devoted his life to his family and his work.
Mr. Jess was a World War II veteran serving as a Staff Sergeant in a Heavy Weapons platoon of the 135th Infantry Regiment with the 34th Infantry Division of North Africa and Italy and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge for injuries at the battle of Monte Casino in Italy.
Mr. Jess married his sweetheart, Rosemarie, in 1948 in Cleveland and together they raised six daughters, Karen, Patti, Bobbi, Elizabeth, Carol and Evie. He was very proud of his Catholic and Polish heritage and was a member of the Union of Poles in America where he held the office of Director for many years and General Secretary for more than 25 years. He was a member of the Catholic War veterans and a life member of the Military order of the Purple Heart and Disabled American Veterans. In addition, Mr. Jess was a member of the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Polish Genealogical Society of America.
Retired from the US Defense Department, he served more than 38 years in many capacities. His last position was the Director of the Office of Administrative Services at the Defense Contract Administrative Services in Cleveland. After his retirement, he satisfied is love of learning by reading, traveling with his wife, and investigating details to enhance his extensive ancestry timeline. But his greatest joy came from his large family who will dearly miss their beloved ?Dziadz.? He is survived by daughters, Karen Chernisky (Richard) of Sagamore Hills; Patricia Krakowski (Joseph) of Mentor; Roberta Shoda (Myles) of Roswell, Georgia; Elizabeth Almquist of Overland Park, Kansas; Carol Welsby (Gary) of Sunbury, Ohio; and Evelyn Stranges (Dennis) of Sunbury, Ohio; 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Rosemarie, brothers, Andrew and Eugene and sisters, Adeline and Dorothy.
Friends may call on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 from 2:00 ? 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 ? 8:00 p.m. at Fortuna Funeral Home, 7076 Brecksville Road, Independence, Ohio 44131. Funeral services Thursday, November 19, 2015 8:30 a.m. at the funeral home followed by Mass of Christian Burial at the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus at 9:30 a.m. Interment St. Mary Cemetery.
