Read MoreI read this obituary with great sadness. Just yesterday a friend and I were sharing recollections of the genius of Professor Johannsen, my favorite instructor at the University of Illinois. He inspired me as a learner when I was an undergraduate, and I even dropped in on one of his classes long after I had graduated. What a wonderful man he was!

Dear Robert and Nancy,
I didn't know your father personally, even though I followed him into the Randall chair here at UIUC. I did know and greatly benefit from his scholarship, especially his fine biography of Stephen A. Douglass. And since arriving here, I have been deeply impressed by the number and quality of his former graduate students and their ardent devotion to their mentor. We have all lost a great deal in his passing.

Robert and I were classmates and good friends as children and graduated from Laurelhurst Grammar School together...At that time our lives took different paths and we never saw each other again. It was exciting for me to hear what a wonderful man and teacher he was during his lifetime.My sympathy and prayers are with the family at this time.

When I attended Professor Johannsen's classes in the late 1960's, while getting my MA in History at the U of I, I did not know that he was from Oregon, or that I would be living here within the year. He was a fine teacher. So sorry for your loss.
