Andrews Mortuary and Crematory - Market Street Chapel - Wilmington Obituary

Robert "Bob" Merritt Kermon, III, 78, of Wilmington, was surrounded by the love of his family when he passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, February 13, 2021.

Bob was born October 4th, 1942 in Wilmington, NC to the late Mary Meares Kermon and Robert M Kermon Jr. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gail Otts Kermon, sister Mary Anne Hughes (Warren), daughter Alma Anne Doehrer (Tom), son Robert Merritt Kermon IV (Maya), son James Clifton Kermon (Caroline). He is also survived by his grandchildren who were all very close to him: Alex Swan, Andrew Swan, Robert M. Kermon V, Natalie Kermon, Juliana Kermon, Caleb Kermon, Kaley Kermon, Camille Kermon.

Bob grew up in Wilmington and spent many hours at his Grandfather’s home in Wrightsville Beach. He was a graduate of New Hanover High School (1960) and enlisted in the US Army March 21, 1961. Bob was assigned to 16th Special Forces group, 101st Airborne and was honorably discharged January 13, 1965.

Bob attended Wilmington College where he met his future wife, Gail Otts. He earned his BA in 1968 from Wilmington College. Bob began working for the Pender County School system that same year. While teaching he also served as an officer for Kure Beach Police Force from 1968 through 1970 and eventually had to make a choice between the two careers. He chose to dedicate his life to education.

His career in education began as a teacher at Topsail. While a teacher with Pender County Schools, he established the first integrated Boy Scouts of America troop in the Cape Fear Council. In 1971 he established a co-ed Explorer Scouts with the focus in SCUBA diving. Bob’s dedication to youth and education earned him the position of Assistant Principal for Topsail High School. In 1983 Bob received his Master’s in Education from UNCW. Two of his children attended Topsail while he was Assistant Principal, riding to school and spending quality time with Dad. Bob left Topsail in 1989 and helped establish and became the first Director of Pender Learning Center in Burgaw from 1990 - 1995. From 1995, until retirement in 1998, he was the Assistant Principal of West Pender School.  Mr. Kermon was respected and loved by his students, especially those at Topsail. Many continue to reach out to his family to check on him.

Bob and Gail brought up their children at Wrightsville Beach in the same home that his Grandfather had built long before Bob was even born. He was the type of neighbor that brought the community together though cookouts, homemade pizza and donuts and swimming parties off their pier. Every Christmas, Bob would make a point to bake hot, homemade cinnamon buns for his neighbors while his children delivered the still warm goodies.

Being teachers, Bob & Gail would always try to make summers fun and vacations that were full of adventure and learning. They traveled across country and throughout all the contiguous United States. They later traveled with their grandkids on many small trips and across the US even going to Alaska. They took trips to Mexico, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, and Ireland. The two had dreams of seeing the world that were unfortunately cut short sooner than they had hoped. But that didn’t stop Bob from still looking and dreaming.

Bob will be missed for his love, sarcasm, laughter, and knowledge. Thank you to Lower Cape Fear Life Care for their support through this difficult time.

Dad, we will miss you so much our hearts hurt, but we will be strong like you were and continue to love and support each other.

Funeral Services were private and entrusted to Andrews Mortuary, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to either Lower Cape Fear Life Care or Wrightsville United Methodist Church.

Not sure what to say?

Dear Gail,
I am sending you my prayers and sympathies for the loss of your beloved husband. I did not know Bob but I knew you as we both taught at THS. I came after his time there and I am sorry I did not get to know him as others did. He was very loved by all. I enjoyed knowing you and sorry we lost touch over the years. You will be in my thoughts and prayers as you continue to journey on. May God surround you with love and comfort from family and friends. Sue France

Bobby and I were childhood friends growing on Harbor Island in the forties. One afternoon I rode my bike with my faithful dog, Big Boy, to Bobby’s house and went inside through the front door. When I left a couple hours later I forgot my bike, left through the back door and walked home. When I called Big Boy for supper he didn’t come. I was outside looking for Big Boy when Bobby’s mother called to say that Big Boy was faithfully waiting for me laying down beside my bike. I reminded...

Dear Gail,
I’m so sorry for your loss. I only knew Bob from our class luncheons, but I thought him a great snd friendly person. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Many blessings for your entire family.
Love,
Genie Lancaster

Bob Kermon was a funny, caring, loving man. I never forget when he visited my family in Jakarta (1998) when I kept punching the arrow down on the elevator...he said to me "Aida, that's not gonna make it any faster"... lol
He was right...
That moment is still making me laugh.
RIP Bob...you'll be forever in our hearts..

Dear Gail,
'Sending you and your family deep sympathy in your loss. Like others from the neighborhood around Pine Street, I fondly remember "Bobby" from our years at Winter Park Elementary School, and I remember you, fondly as well, from our years of Sunday school and MYF at 5th Avenue. May you be surrounded with comfort in the memories of your rich life together.

I met Mr Kermon 20 plus years ago when I moved from California. I always enjoyed talking with him and hearing some of his stories. He was extremely kind to a newcomber. We are sorry for your loss Mrs. Kermon
