Not sure what to say?

Some months back my father, Rod Hockley called to speak with Martha at the Historical Society in Astoria. It had been many years since they'd spoken. When Dad inquired about Mr Lovell, he was saddened to hear that Mr Lovell had passed away.

Working for Mr Lovell was in my dad's words, "a privilege." He was always gracious, a consummate gentleman. Because Dad worked at Lovell Auto Co throughout most of my childhood, I have my own memories of Mr Lovell. My first memory of him was...

Mary and family,
Jeannette and I and our family are deeply saddened at the loss of Bob. He was a real gentleman and the model of what a business leader should be in their community. He was an inspiration to me and a great help in becoming established in Clatsop county. He will be missed by us all. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Bob was one of my oldest buddies. We first met and became friends hiking across the dunes as 12-year-old Boy Scouts for our first of a number of years at Camp Meriwether. In 1937 we, along with our mutual friend, Stuart Durkheimer, also recently deceased, went to the National Boy Scout Jamboree and the World Jamboree in the Netherlands followed by five sobering days in Hitler's Germany, storm-troopers and all, the year before Kristallnacht on our way to Switzerland — somewhere I have a sad...

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Bob. I have fond memories of the 3 months we spent in 1937 on our trip to the National and 5th World Jamborees. We will miss seeing Bob in town and at scouting events. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mary and family: We are so sorry to hear of Bob's death. I am so glad that Priscilla and I met up with you in the library in Astoria last March. It was so good to see a good friend of our parents. Our deepest sympathy to all of you. Mary Sue (Lowe) and Dave Olson, Longview WA

My heart goes out to all of you with the loss of your husband and father. What wonderful lives our parents provided all of us with while growing up. I can still remember the beach bonfires with hot dogs and s'mores - and an unnamed young boy who had a knack for letting the ocean get him wet! Keep these thoughts and many others close to your heart during this difficult time.

I remember well in 1968 driving home to Portland with Bob in my brand new Opel Kadet. he so graciously discounted for me so I could afford the $2200 price tag! He was such a gentleman and his son, Bill, was my dearest friend for many years. May you all find comfort in the memories of this wonderful patriarch and friend.

Dear Lovell Family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My father often spoke of Bob with such fondness as he reflected to his jamboree days abroad. Again, my sincerest sympathy is yours. Julie Durkheimer
