Robert MacNaughton Obituary

Dr. Robert James "Jim" MacNaughton, Jr.

Greenville

Dr. Robert James "Jim" MacNaughton, Jr., husband of Sandra May MacNaughton, died Sunday, November 2, 2014.

Jim was born and raised in Charlotte, NC and was the son of the late Robert James MacNaughton, Sr. and Evelyn Abernathy MacNaughton.

After attending Charlotte Catholic High School, Jim went to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD where he studied pre-medicine. He then earned his Medical degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Jim did his residency and internship at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Jim served as a surgeon in the US Army in Fort Campbell, KY from 1976-1978. Starting in 1978, Jim practiced as a General Surgeon in Greenville before retiring in 2001. Jim served as the Medical Staff President at St. Francis Hospital in 1985 and served on the Hospital Board of Trustees from 1987-1994. Among his fellow doctors, nurses, and hospital staff, Dr. MacNaughton was known and beloved as much for his kindness, humor, and his humility as he was his surgical expertise. In addition, Jim was a devoted member of St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Most of all, Jim was a proud family man who loved spending quality time with his large and growing family and his many dear friends. His laughter and spirit touched all of those who knew him and will never be forgotten.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 45 years, are his daughter, Molly Amanda MacNaughton and fiancé Robert Giacomelli of New York, NY; two sons, Robert James "Robby" MacNaughton III and wife, Dana, of Bronxville, NY and Christopher Jon "Chris" MacNaughton and wife, Elizabeth, of Charleston; brother, John Phillip MacNaughton and wife, Bonnie, of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren, Robert James "Bo" MacNaughton IV, Stuart Cornell MacNaughton, Scarlett Grace MacNaughton, Evelyn Anne MacNaughton, Louisa Grace MacNaughton, and Satchel James MacNaughton, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A vigil will be held Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, November 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to St Anthony of Padua School (311 Gower St, Greenville, 29611) or Fisher House Foundation (fisherhouse.org).

This fine man, with help from his team and from God, saved my mother´s life in 1979, performing an extraordinarily difficult surgery called the Whipple Procedure. She went on to live over 36 more years. Thanks be to Dr. McNaughton and to God.

I worked with Dr. MacNaughton for many years at St. Francis Hospital. He was an excellent surgeon, but more than that, he was a kind, caring man. He always treated the staff with appreciation and respect. H has been missed.
