Robert Austin Maddox, Sr.

Robert Austin Maddox Sr., one of the kindest, gentlest, and most patient men, passed away on Tuesday September 29, 2020 at the age of 64.

If you have known him for many years, read that first line, and are wondering about that statement, yes, it is true, Maddog Maddox had finally mellowed. He found the patience and amazing strength to fight a good battle against PKD. He just could not win that war, and as you know, Maddog never gave up easily.

He always had a strong faith, and God gave him the tools he needed to wage this battle the last few years, but apparently God decided it was time for it to end.

His life was filled with people who adored him, loved him, admired him and also some he drove a little crazy. Robert Maddox was always by the book, the government procedure, and never wavered from that path. Robert was also a man who, if you needed help, he was there in an instant.

He was born in Montgomery, Alabama, was raised a true southern gentleman, and a Roll Tide fan forever.

Robert served his country in the Air Force for four years, beginning in 1976 with the 4th Security Police Squadron at Seymour Johnson AFB as a bomb dog handler, security specialist and small arms expert.  He later joined the Air force reserves serving for over 20 years at NAS Fort Worth, formerly Carswell AFB Fort Worth.  Robert was first a member of the 457th Fighter Squadron in the Intel unit.  He later moved to the 301st Operational Support Flight unit.

Robert earned a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice at Troy State University in Troy, Alabama after his four years active duty in the Air Force.

Robert worked for over 35 years in the Security Division as a Security Specialist at Lockheed Martin Fort Worth. He was an active Lockheed employee, responsible for building areas and ensuring every regulation and procedure was followed.  There were no cutting corners, ever.

Robert coached baseball at the Benbrook fields for many years. He first coached his son’s team but grew to love the boys and the challenges of helping them grow, not only in the sport of baseball but also into outstanding young men. He later umpired at those same fields, loving every minute helping T-ballers while dodging bats and foul balls.

Robert leaves behind an ocean of people who will miss him, remember him, and I hope will tell stories about him for years to come.  I am not listing the names of the family he left here on earth, or the ones that welcomed him to Heaven with open arms and a deck of Skip-Bo cards.  We all know who we are, and we will carry the love he gave us forever.

Robert walked this earth a proud, loving and private man, leaving his footprint in many places and on many hearts. Our son, Robert Jr and I will strive to make him proud of us each day; strengthened by the love he gave us and the support of all of you.  Robert, my love, stay warm, stay close and Roll Tide forever.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Monday, October 12th at 2:00 pm at Stoney Ridge Villa in the Courtyard.  451 Stoney Ridge, Azle, TX  76020.  For your safety and those attending, please wear a mask.
