Robert May Obituary

Robert (Bob) P. May passed away in his home on Saturday, April 2nd after battling cancer for nearly two years. He is preceded in death by his father Robert F. May, his sister Mary McHugh, and brother Francis May. He is survived by his wife Marilyn (Roy) May; sons Ryan Patrick May, Charles Hagan May, Jonathan Richard Hart, Robert Patrick May Jr, and Jeffrey Michael May; his mother Dorothy (McHugh) May; and siblings Dorothy McDermott, Joe May, Joanne Fay, Donna Trickett, Debbie Lonergan and Jackie Leonard. Bob is also survived by many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Robert Patrick May was born on May 5, 1949 in Boston, MA the eldest son of Dorothy (McHugh) and Robert F. May. He attended Brookline High School and, after graduation, joined the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Marines until he was honorably discharged in July of 1970. In 1973 May joined the fledgling company that is now known as FedEx Corporation as the companys first Station Manager at its Boston facility. He was on the job the day the company delivered its first package. While at FedEx May rose through its corporate ranks relocating to company headquarters in Memphis, TN. He eventually became the President of FedEx Business Logistics. After leaving FedEx in 1993, May was employed by a variety of companies for executive-level and board positions including Charter Communications, Inc. and Cablevision Systems Corporation. This also led to his placement on the board of HealthSouth Corporation, which lead to a major milestone of his career. While on the board of HealthSouth, May and other board members uncovered a major accounting scandal involving its founder and chief executive. The companys offices were raided by the FBI and, in an emergency meeting, the board chose May to become interim CEO and his tenure in that position is largely recognized for keeping the company out of bankruptcy. In 2003 he was asked to testify before congress on the topic of corporate governance as it pertained to HealthSouth. In that same year The Wall Street Journal named him a Corporate Director Who Made a Difference. BusinessWeek described him as one of the best managers of the year for 2004. In 2005 May was tapped by Calpine Corporation as CEO and board member to lead them through one of the largest corporate reorganizations in U.S. history. Within two years Calpine emerged from bankruptcy with a strong balance sheet on the NYSE. Since his departure from Calpine, May had served on the Advisory Board of Deutsche Bank USA. Mays professional legacy was one of employee empowerment. In his 2003 congressional testimony he detailed his efforts in eliminating barriers between senior management and rank and file employees. Bob Mays personal legacy was one of love and concern for his family and friends. He welcomed any opportunity to cook for them. He also enjoyed readingmaintaining a substantial libraryas well as golfing and tennis. His passions were boating and fishing and he was able to spend the summer of 2010 on his boat, The Nauti Girl, with his wife and family. Visitation was held on Wednesday, April 6th, from 4-8pm EST, at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 1201 South Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach, Florida 33401. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 7th at 11am EST at Christ Fellowship Church (South Campus), 5312 Northlake Blvd, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33418. In lieu of flowers please honor the memory of Bob May by making a donation to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Dr Jaffer Ajani Research, PO Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210, 800-525-5841

We thought of you with LOVE today
But that is nothing new
We thought about you yesterday
And days before that too
We think of you in silence
We often speak your name
Now all we have are memories
And your picture in a frame
Your memory is our keepsake
With which we'll never part
God has you in his keeping
We have you in our hearts.
We miss you and love you !

April 2, 2012

A thousand times we needed you
A thousand times we cried
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died
A heart of gold stopped beating
two twinkling eyes closed to rest
God broke our hearts to prove he only took the best
never a day goes by that you're not in our hearts and our souls.

Miss and love you!!

To the May Family,

I also started with FEDEX (1973) in the formative years and was one of the initial Gang of 16 Managing Directors selected along with Bob to run sales and operations in our respective districts.

Those were pretty heady days-the best of times and the worst of times...but through it all we, and especially Bob, helped to reinvent an entire industry.

All the FEDEX stories are now urban legend and their tall tales and wild exploits are the stuff dreams are made of and those stories and conversations about the early days will keep Bob's "Can Do" spirit and "Unbridled" enthusiasm alive and well...

I left FEDEX in 1992 and remember Bob and Bob May Sr. with great affection and admiration.

Bob's accomplishments after FEDEX were just as memorable and accomplished.... I will lift a glass and toast my FEDEX colleague with "one more for the road..."

"Here's to you Bob... and to your family and your legacy, your good deeds and unselfish manner, your fiery personality and dedication to excellence, your military service and professional accomplishments...but most of all Bob...here's to you..nobody did it better.

With sincerest regards to your family,

Dr. Christos M. Cotsakos

In March of 2003 HealthSouth was on life support, I will never forget how the leadership of Bob May and Joel Gordon stepped in to stabilize this great company. I was in 2003 and still am a CEO at the Wichita Falls HealthSouth. Bob May's visionary leadership is still appreciated by those of in the field who benefited from him. What he did for us will be discussed as long as long as there is a HealthSouth. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.

Marilyn & the boys-
Over the last 10 years, I have constantly talked about "My Mentor". The man who gave me a chance in business and subsequently taught me everything I know. I am where I am today, a VP of a Technology company, because of the time he spent with me. I will never be able to thank him enough for what he did and more than that, for the special man and human being he was. May he rest in peace.

To the May clan...my deepest and heart felt condolences on your loss. I last saw Bob when Bob Sr. passed, and I regret that I did not have a chance to see him again since then. I have many fond memories with all of you during those early years at FedEx, and always admired the close ties that you have with each other. That is surely what will get you through another loss.

Marilyn, I think we only met once. Bob and I go back to Harvard PMD37.
We have not been in touch for many years and was shocked to get notice from one of our ski stag buddies that Bob had passed.
One of my most memorable times with Bob was while playing golf with him at the Colonial CC memeber guest in Memphis,Fred Smith called a management meeting on Saturday morning when we were scheduled to compete. He finally showed after about 8th hole and we went on to lose the match.
I know how much this hurts and I wish you the best of everything!

Marilyn,
My heartfelt condolences to you and the boys. I will always remember Bob for his pioneering spirit and leadership during the formative years at FedEx in the BLS days. He was an early adopter and champian for FX's supply chain activities, and a driving force in the development and global expansion of those initiatives. Those of us who worked for him knew him as always being an open minded approachable leader who wasn't afraid to shake things up. Bob embodied the "purple blooded" spirit of FedEx. He accomplished much in his life and will be missed.

Celebrating a life well lived. I fondly recall meeting Bob during the HealthSouth conversion days and enjoyed his wit and cordial ambiance he always gave towards all whom he encountered. We visited many markets together with his signature "brown bag lunches" to calm the troops and lay out the plan. His spirit and will are the reasons why the business still stands today. I will miss him and cherish the memories, especially the rides home to Florida together. My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief.
