Prof. McNaughton --I never felt comfortable calling him Bob, as it just didn't seem to convey the respect due him-- was a fine man. I'm lucky to have taken his courses, read his books and papers, been his teaching assistant, and his last Ph.D. student. My son is named not after me but rather after Prof. McNaughton.

Dr. McNaughton was a true genius and a gentleman. I am proud to have had him as my graduate adviser. Truly a wonderful person. Further, his influence on the field of theoretical computer science/mathematics will be felt for quite some time.

A wonderful human being, philosopher & scientist was Bob McNaughton. I was privileged to be his younger colleague for all his years at RPI. His generosity with insight, help and concern was unflagging. He gave automata and theoretical computer science real presence at Rensselaer. I also remember fondly his wife Vivien Leonard, with whom I also worked and who added a happy dimension to Bob's life. They are missed.

My condolences. He was a very pleasant person and the instructor of my all time favorite course (on theory of computation).

Bob McNaughton was one of the first faculty members here at RPI that I met when I arrived from Yale in 1974. I had read some of his work while at Yale. We struck up a lasting friendship. I can truly say Bob was one of the professors whose presence here caused me to select RPI for the remaining 40 years of my own career. I was deeply involved in formulating relevant ECSE computer hardware design courses at RPI and eventually incorporated some of his work on derivatives of "regular...

Bob McNaughton was an esteemed colleague on the board of Friends of Chamber Music, generous in every way, especially in spirit. My sincere sympathies to his family.

My sympathies. He was a kind and generous colleague, and a joy to have lunch with.

I consider myself as very privileged for being a student of Prof. McNaughton in his graduate computational complexity course. I also learned Automata theory by reading his book while I was an undergraduate student. Prof. McNaughton was a very kind person. He was a great computer scientist and a great teacher. My deepest condolences to you and your family.
