ROBERT MENDENHALL Obituary

ROBERT MENDENHALL Robert L. "Bob" Mendenhall, 90, of Las Vegas, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2018. He was born May 22, 1928, in Raymond, Alberta, Canada to Wesley Deal Mendenhall and Geneve Harmer. He married Paula Clements June 9, 1948, in Springville, Utah. An innovator, entrepreneur and community pillar, Bob's company, Las Vegas Paving, remains a constant icon that has employed many people and has been a major contributor in the building of Las Vegas since its founding in 1958. With a passion for construction at a very young age, he became known for his innovations that transformed the construction industry. Holding over 50 patents, his crowning achievement was patent No. 4,000,000 for recycling asphalt-aggregate compositions. That forever changed the ways roads are paved throughout the world leading him to be appropriately named the "Grandfather of Asphalt Recycling." His passion and zeal for growth in the city he loved inspired him to lead several successful businesses including large housing developments, commercial subdivisions, a golf course, night club and a casino. In addition, he served on the Nevada State Contractors Board. Understanding the need for students to have real-world applications to what they learn in the classroom, he founded the Mendenhall Innovation Program at the UNLV College of Engineering. Knowing the need for UNLV Men's Basketball to be able to attract and recruit the best athletes he provided funding for the Mendenhall Center. His passion for flying remained a constant presence in his life. Whether it was transporting local officials, checking on business endeavors or taking the family on vacation he was always ready to take to the skies. To everyone he met, he conveyed a zeal for hard work and knowing what it took to get things done. His love and dedication to his wife and family will be missed. He was preceded in death by his brother, Kay; sister, Shirley; daughter, Valerie; and son, Terry. He is survived by his loving wife, of 70 years, Paula; sister, Connie; children, Marc and Lori; daughter-in-law, Vyonne; grandchildren, Jason (Lisa), Heather (Devon) Dahl, Ryan (Kelli), Joshua (Becky), Teryn, Cheyenne (Matt) Smith, Gavin; step-grandchildren, Greg (Mariam) and Paige Daubs; and 16 great-grandchildren. A viewing will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 14. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 15. Both services will be at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel, 10550 Alta Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89145. Burial will take place at the Palm Valley View Memorial Park, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89123. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health at http://www.keepmemoryalive.org, or by phone at (702) 263-9797.

Mr. Mendenhall was envied for succeeding against all odds at being the best in the hardest, most painful business of all- paving. We may all look upon his success, but few could hardly achieve it.

After his 20th year he could have retired but he kept it going only so that his people could be #1 just like him. He took care of them like family. His people and his family are humble and lead the business with high integrity. They do good by all. This was a true American man.

You guys are truly #1, and we are blessed to be able to work with you all.

To be the best is nothing more than a committed decision- For life.

Prayers go to the Mendenhall Family. They are excellent folk and Bob will be greatly missed as our Patriarch. I don't see Bob "Resting" in Heaven. I can see Bob helping God create Worlds. He is probably coming up with better ways to create them. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of the LVPC Family. Love Gene Heatwole

(I work at Las vegas paving)

I wrote this poem for the families of the Mendenhall and love ones.

Don't cry for me no more tears, My physical body has left. But my spirit lives forever ... heaven is my home now. And here is where I stay ... Don't cry for me I'm at peace You must be strong. Don't cry for me. You must find your strength. Don't cry for me ... for it was my time. We will reunite one day , but for now you must stay strong. I am not alone. For I am surrounded by angels. Don't cry for me, for my father in heaven brought me to his kingdom of heaven. Don't cry for me,for I fear no more. he will keep me safe. Don't Cry for Me. I'm up in heaven watching over my families and my love ones. I will forever carry my families... be strong and find strength in each other and wipe your tears. I'm home. I'm finally home (Heaven). It is not the end, it is the beginning of my new life.

Robert (Bob) Mendenhall,
Since the day he was born. He saw the future and had a grasp on his dreams. The dream of building Las Vegas Paving. He made it into reality. With hope with faith with strength and the hard work he put in, he never stopped his dreams. He continued as his family grew and through his kids, and grand kids. He taught them the value. I only met Bob Mendenhall once and it was such a pleasure... to meet someone with a kind heart. Even in his busy schedule, He left his memories in our hearts. Also in our thoughts. We will never forget, for he still lives with in us... for it was his time to leave this earth. For his purpose here was completed. So now his new life begins. Up in paradise with his father, Home at last as he continues his dreams. Always watching over his families and loved ones. Bob Mendenhall with all my heart I thank you... Nancy Carricarte

I have been at Las Vegas Paving for over 19 + years. He interacted with the employees, and came out on jobs and was always very kind to everyone. I have never worked for a better company or person. It was inspiring see a man who was so successful be so humble and approachable. My thoughts and prayers are with the Mendenhall family during this difficult time. Bob will be greatly missed .

I have only been at LVP a short time by LVP standards. I was immediately struck by the fact that Bob was in the office almost every day at 87, 88, 89 years of age. He interacted with the employees, made business decisions and was always very kind to me. I have never worked for a better company or person. It was inspiring see a man who was so successful be so humble and approachable. My thoughts and prayers are with the Mendenhall family during this difficult time. Bob will be greatly missed around the office.
