Not sure what to say?

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Metcalf when his office was next to ours. He invited me for a "tour" of his office. I was impressed at how organized he was! I had not lived in Ann Arbor long so did not realize until later that I had just met a living legend in the field of architecture. He was always so very pleasant. I feel fortunate that our paths crossed. My deepest condolences to his family.

I was in Dean Metcalf's Materials in Building class in 1982 during his tenure as Dean. It was a refreshing change from the purely theoretical premise of the design studio. I found him genuinely personable and honest in his discussions and critiques. He was a man of solid character and justifiable self-confidence, unpretentious, and willing to share his experience with those who would listen. I count him among the most impactful architects to directly influence my architectural education.

Professor Metcalf was the Dean of A&D, but in Construction class he talked to us like we were his equals. Once, as he paced in the front of the room rubbing his head, he told us that he did not have the answers for what we would face in the future, but he knew that we would. We may never be the equals of a man as great as Dean Metcalf, but I know that he made all of us better architects and better men. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to see him again in 2014 at our 40th class reunion.

My sincerest condolences to Prof. Metcalf's family. I was a student of his in 1963 in Materials and Methods of Architectural Construction. Thru his expertise, he sparked my interest in the technical, cross discipline, coordination side of the profession. That passion pervaded my entire career. On different occasions, I was told that I was an architect with an engineer's mind, which I considered to be compliment. For the last 20-years of my career, I was the Architectural Discipline...

I'm very saddened to read of Robert Metcalf's passing. I discovered his work about 1 hour ago after looking at some photos of his house on a photographer's website. I did a little digging and found information about his exhibit in 2010. He was truly a great modernist talent! Beautiful, inspiring work.

Robert Metcalf was an excellent professor who was one of my favorite. I believe I had him for a construction administration or a Materials & Methods class. Also for a structural design class. I appreciate his contribution to my education and extend my sympathy to his family

I have fond memories of Bob Metcalf as a professor and from working in his office in the summer of 1968. What he taught me about organizing and putting together a set of construction documents has been a positive influence throughout my career. Thanks, Bob.

Bob was a dear friend and esteemed colleague who afforded me the opportunity to teach under his deanship while I was in my own practice. I will remember him for his art in practice and his skill as a devoted teacher and mentor.

I had the pleasure of working with Bob for years, remodeling and maintaining the homes around Ann Arbor that he designed and updated. My relationship with Bob was one of the highlights and best memories of my remodeling career. Old school, in the best possible sense! I often think fondly of Bob's hand-drawn plans, complete to the last detail. And Bob's daily trips out to the job site. Bob set an example of character and professionalism that we would do well to foster in our work and...
