ROBERT ELLIS MITCHELL, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, passed away January 30, 2025.


Bob was born in Decatur, Illinois on February 5, 1942, to David Thomas Mitchell and Alberta Hinton Mitchell.  He graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington, Illinois, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Southern Illinois University
in Carbondale, Illinois.  He was a Professor of Art in Ceramics and Metalsmithing at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas.  He later was the Business Manager of the Society of North American Goldsmiths and owned a computer consulting company.  Bob also taught jewelry and metalsmithing at Milwaukee Area Technical College.   He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Las Cruces.


Bob is survived by his wife, Susan Herrs Mitchell; son David Mitchell (Terry); granddaughter Katherine Mitchell; sisters Patricia Grubb, Sallie Brewer (Fred) and Jody Walters (Terry); sisters-in-law Marilyn Herrs and Rei-Shi Herrs; nieces Linda Tucker (Hugh) and Carli Herrs (Gregg Sconce); nephew Justin Herrs; and several cousins.


He was preceded in death by his parents, David, and Alberta Mitchell; stepmother Marie Mitchell; brothers-in-law Dr. William B. Grubb, Jr., and Walter E. Herrs; and nephew Jeffrey B. Grubb.


A Memorial Service will be held at 10 AM Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Peace Lutheran Church, 1701 E. Missouri Ave., Las Cruces, NM. 


No flowers are requested.  Memorials may be made to Border Servant Corps c/o Peace Lutheran Church or to Peace Lutheran Church.
