Van Hise and Callagan Funeral Home - Point Pleasant Beach Obituary

Robert Henry Mueller passed away on March 11, 2023, at Sunnyside Manor in Wall, NJ.  He was 102 years old.  Robert (Bob) Mueller was born on May 29, 1920, in rural Plainfield, Illinois.  His parents, Walter and Anna (Harms) had two other children – Norman and Marianne (Frausto).  Marianne is still very active and at the age of 94, lives in her home in Illinois. Norman’s son David, also from Illinois, maintained frequent contact with Bob throughout the years through visits and correspondence. Bob and Marianne regularly video chatted up until the time of his passing.

Bob is survived by his children, Richard, Doug, and Lori (Martz). His memories will be cherished by his four grandchildren, Tierney (O’Donnell), Chad Mueller, Carly (Orgill) and Evan (Martz).  Bob was also blessed by five great grandchildren, Rory, Norah, Max, James and Meike.

Bob was pre-deceased by his first wife Bette (Stahl), his second wife Betty (Teeter), his father Walter, his mother Anna, and his brother Norman.

In his youth, Bob lived and worked on the family farm, and attended the University of Illinois, graduating in 1942 with a B.S in Chemical Engineering. Bob began work for Esso/Exxon as a chemical engineer.  He worked in research and development, assisting the war effort (WWII) through the production of butyl rubber for tires for military transports and other transportation uses.  He then worked in the chemical industry where he was involved in research and development on polymers. After 43 years in the industry, Bob retired and enjoyed retirement life in Florida and New Jersey.

Bob met his first wife, Bette, on the beach in New Jersey, where he was vacationing.  Bob and Bette were married for 52 years and spent their lives at residences in New Jersey and Florida, where they pursued their passion for golf, travel and socializing with family and friends   At their New Jersey summer home, Bob could regularly be seen water skiing, sailing his two small sailboats, and assisting the local beach community.  After Bette’s passing, Bob married his second wife, Betty and resided in Florida.

Bob and Bette had had three children – Richard, Doug, and Lori.  Richard currently resides in California, where he is an author and works in the film industry.  Doug and his wife Linda live in Pennsylvania.   Doug retired from the environmental industry and Linda from pharmaceuticals.  Lori and her husband Matt live in New Jersey, where Lori retired as a civil engineer and math teacher, and Matt as a retired master electrician.

Bob was a congregant of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Point Pleasant, NJ.   He was a devoted fan of the NY Giants and NY Yankees , keeping track of team stats as he watched the games.  He loved spending time with all his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  Bob’s legacy will live on in his sister, his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  His devotion to strong moral values and family is a legacy to his life. Not sure what to say?

I just heard about Roberts passing and was so sad to hear. He obviously lived a long and incredible life. Working at Sunnyside Manor I got to talk with Bob a lot. He was so smart, and so on top of everything at his age. He amazed me every day. My condolences to the family. It was a pleasure knowing all of you as well. You were so blessed. I will never forget Bob!

Living so far away, we didn't get to see Uncle Bob & Aunt Bette very often. I am so glad I was able to see Uncle Bob again a couple years ago, but what I enjoyed most was our chats on Grandpad (thank you so much, cuz!). I even was happy to have him reach out to me on Grandpad when he accidentally called me instead of my cousin (apparently Doug was right beneath my name). He never failed to ask how my mom was & to give her his best. I know he will be missed by many, family and friends. What...

Lori I am very sorry to hear of your father's passing he was a good friend of my dads and I have many fond memories of
him around the club bringing in the raft and barrels at the end of every season. I remember one night when he and your Mom were at my folks for dinner and someone came in the house and let him know his parking lights were on in his car. His answer, "thats why they call them parking lights" . Oh the memories of the magical place we got to spend our summers! 102 years is...
