OAKES, Robert Lee, Sr. - Of Flint Township, age 83, went to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, November 16, 2010. He was at home with his family beside him. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, November 19, 2010 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Pastor Jim Rayment officiating. Burial in Crestwood Cemetery. Visitation 12 Noon Friday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the American Lung Association. Bob was born March 19, 1927 in Clarkton, MO the Son of Robert Lee Oakes and Sally Louise (Dye) Oakes. He married Sylvia Irene Bridwell on August 3, 1955. He was proud that he served his country during WWII on the U.S.S. Marshall. He worked at GM for 30 years, retiring in 1982. He spent his retirement years with family and friends, along with his passions gardening and fishing. He was a wonderful husband and father; with his family being his number one priority. Everyone enjoyed listening to him play the harmonica and hearing the tall tales he spun, as well as his great sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Helen Castleberry, brother Selden Thomas "Bud" Oakes. Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sylvia; daughters Dana Clark; Rebecca (Scott) Waller; sons Robert (Sharon) Oakes Jr.; and Matthew Oakes. Eight grandchildren: Corey Clark, Keri (Adam) Gailbreath, Tiffini (Devon) Wolfe, Robert Oakes III, Alaina (John) Grosjean, Nicholas Lefler, Amy (Matt) Sharkey, Kevin Waller. Eight great-grandchildren: Devin Clark, Mason Clark, McKenzie Clark, Amiyah Clark, Jaden Wolfe, Kira Wolfe, Gage Wolfe, Kinsley Wolfe. We would like to thank McLaren Visiting Nurse and Hospice for the fine care they provided for Bob. Your condolences and memories can be shared with the family at swartzfuneralhomeinc.com.

Sorry for your loss! Bob was like a 2nd father, he was a good man who loved his family very much. Bob would come home from work with candy or ice cream not only for his 4 children, but for me and my 2 sisters. He was fair and I will truly miss him. We will meet again someday. Love You Bob

I can say that I am sorry to loose my father in law.....I am glad I had the chance to meet him. Wonderful man ..but I guess the Lord needs him more than we needed him here .
