East Lyme - Robert W. Peirce - Beloved Husband, Father, PopPop, Engineer, Builder of Submarines, and Man of Faith. Robert W. Peirce, affectionately known as "Bob," of East Lyme, passed away peacefully at William Backus Hospital Aug. 24, 2025, following a brief illness. His family and loved ones were by his side and were able to say their goodbyes. Born with a quiet strength and a brilliant mind, Bob lived a life marked by faith, dedication and love - for his work, his family, and his Savior.
As a child, Bob spent many joyful days visiting his grandparents on the Chesapeake Bay, where he developed a lifelong love of boating and fishing for crabs. Those early experiences near the water sparked a passion that remained with him throughout his life - especially sailing and motorboating with his family. Bob graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1963 from Conestoga Valley High School, already demonstrating a strong aptitude in math, science and academics. He went on to attend Lehigh University, earning a Bachelor of Science in both mechanical and electrical engineering. His thirst for knowledge continued as he later completed a master's in systems management from the University of Southern California.
In 1968, Bob began his career at Electric Boat spanning over an impressive 43 years, culminating in his retirement in 2011 as manager of welding and materials engineering. He was honored to be a Distinguished Shipbuilder recipient. His name quickly grew for developing and implementing innovative electromechanical welding systems to support both pipe and structural production - accomplishing all of this before the era of modern computing. In 1975, Bob was promoted to chief of engineering, and over the years contributed to the construction of four classes of submarines, each presenting unique technical and procedural challenges. A proud builder of submarines, Bob earned the respect and admiration of colleagues, the welding technical community at NAVSEA, the supervisor of shipbuilding, and EB's vendors.
After his retirement, Bob returned as a consultant, further solidifying his legacy as a leader, problem-solver and mentor. Those who worked with him remember not only his technical brilliance, but also his humility, calm demeanor, and genuine interest in others' lives.
In 1972, Bob married the love of his life, Beth Kochenour. Together they shared 53 years of a faith-filled, loving marriage. Though they were unable to have biological children, they deeply longed to build a family. After much thought and prayer, Bob and Beth joyfully adopted three young children, creating the family they had always dreamed of. Bob loved and cared for his family in quiet, steadfast ways that words can hardly capture. He was always present - dependable, selfless and deeply devoted. Now grown, each of his children mourns the irreplaceable loss of a father they deeply cherished.
Bob's strong Christian faith was central to his life. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior while still in elementary school, after attending a series of sessions led by a visiting evangelist. He maintained that relationship with Christ throughout his life - attending church regularly, serving as Deacon of finance, studying Scripture daily, and faithfully praying over his family. His walk with God was not just a belief, but a way of life that shaped his character and his choices.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Beth Peirce of East Lyme; his sister, Susan Peirce of Lancaster, Pa.; and his three daughters, Ashley Peirce of Niantic, Jennifer Peirce of Colchester, and Kathryn Peirce of East Lyme. He is also survived by his cherished grandson, Matthew Mazzarella of East Lyme; and his niece, Deborah Kochenour of Seekonk, Mass. He was predeceased by his parents, Elinor and Harry Peirce; and his brother and sister-in-law, Neil and Edie Kochenour.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Grace Fellowship Church, 102 Providence-New London Turnpike (Route 184), North Stonington. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Grace Evangelical Church or the
