Christy and Family, Please accept our most sincere condolences to you and all of the Pennoyers on your father's passing. Your father is a wonderful example of the Pennoyer tradition of effecting material and positive change to New York City through their service to so many of the city's cultural and educational institutions.

I met Robert Pennoyer at a concert and we struck up a conversation. We exchanged stories about his seeing the flag raising on Iwo Jima and I told him about my uncle's experience in the Navy at Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941, a black sailor who was a cook, but became a fighting soldier during the attack. I read his memoir and realized we had several friends in common. I've never forgotten how personable and humble he was regarding his family history. Condolences to his family.

As a chauffeur with London Town Cars for the past 35 years I have had the distinct honor of driving Mr. Pennoyer many times. Each time he was as kind, considerate and gracious as the previous time. In our last trip a few months back he and his daughter gifted me one of his copies of his autobiography for a friend whose brother served in the navy in the years that Mr. Pennoyer served. Bob was our neighbor on East 65th Street for 20 years when our children were growing up. He could not have been nicer and a better neighbor. He was always pleasant, with a big smile and a welcoming hello. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word. Judy and I mourn his passing.
