Groton - Robert Lee Perry, 72, of 129 Seneca Drive, Groton, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London after a long battle with cancer.

He was born in Westernport, Md. on Feb. 6, 1938. Bob married Sue Ellen Hoelck on Nov. 22, 1969, in East Lyme. He retired as a Vice President from Merrill Lynch in New London.

He was a member and past president of the Groton Rotary Club where he had 45 years of perfect attendance and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He served eight years in the National Guard, was on the finance board of St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, member and past president of the Shennecossett Beach Club, and was a member of the Groton Lodge of Elks and the Shennecossett Yacht Club.

A wonderful and loving husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Sue Ellen, his son, Robert Lee Perry Jr. of Clearwater, Fla., his daughter, Ellen Perry Hammen of Quaker Hill, and four grandchildren, Joshua Lee Perry, Bobby Perry, Freya Hammen, and Hawken Hammen.

He was predeceased by his mother, Mary, and his sister, Delores.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church in Groton. Interment in Maplewood Cemetery will be private. Visiting hours will be from 3 until 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be directed to St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Road, Groton, CT 06340 or to the Groton Rotary Club, PO Box 798, Groton, CT 06340.

Dear Sue Ellen, Rob & Ellen, I am so very sorry to learn of Bob's passing. I have many fond life memories of him and you as well. So glad I ran into both of you this summer and had the chance to talk with you. I know you both held a special place in my Mom & Dad's hearts too.
